The characters of Scrubs are a considerable part of what made it such an incredible and hilarious show, perhaps even the most underrated single-camera comedy series of the 21st century. There are no flawless characters, everyone has moments of being wrong, but not necessarily being bad people, that is except for Chief of Medicine Bob Kelso, who gets frequently portrayed as a villain.

There is no doubt that for a huge chunk of the show, he acts like a pretty bad person. However, as time goes on, there are various ways in which Dr. Kelso gets better and better, whether that be as a person or to the audiences.

10 Moments Of Genuine Goodness

Kelso is time and time again shown to be a pretty bad person who does not care much for anything but himself and the money the hospital can bring in.

But, throughout his time as Chief of Medicine, he shows moments of genuine goodness, like turning a blind eye to some insurance-related issues, getting shown to be impacted by getting forced to retire, and more. While he is Chief of Medicine, they are few and far between, but they are there.

9 Snippets Of His Personal Life

One of the primary sources of these moments during his time as Chief of Medicine and something that crops up more and more after his retirement is his personal life that, for so long, is quite the mystery.

Audiences get to see that Bob has a personal life, and even friends, like his gardener, or the friend he has lunch in the park with, and genuine love to give out, most explicitly seen through his dog Baxter. Seeing more of his personal life just adds more to the character.

8 Retired On His Own Terms

When Kelso’s job came under jeopardy thanks to Elliot exposing his age of sixty-five, there was an evident sadness in him, and he did not want to go.

In reality, he just wanted the right to end on his own terms. As soon as he got given that opportunity, he grabbed it alongside his portrait, and left the position of Chief of Medicine, with a smile on his face, with the writers making sure fans and characters knew he really did care.

7 Sincere Goodbye To Ted

As soon as he did announce his leave and grabbed his painting for the road, he gave Ted a real and sincere goodbye, in a moment that was genuinely touching.

Of course, Bob never really left Sacred Heart, but when Ted and Gooch announced they were leaving to go traveling, Kelso gave him one more sincere goodbye, in the form of a night of getting incredibly drunk, and gathering people to say their farewells the next day.

6 Time In Coffee Shop

As mentioned before, just because Kelso left the position of Chief of Medicine did not mean he was going to leave Sacred Heart. While he was not employed, he remained at the Coffee Bucks.

After winning a contest guaranteeing himself a lifetime supply of muffins, and with he and Enid unable to travel, Bob remains in Sacred Heart, thankfully for fans meaning more of the great character, and providing us with more hilarious moments.

5 Shown To Struggle With Job

Similar to how he got shown a few times to be a genuinely good person, there were also numerous occasions where it was made clear he struggled with the job he had as Chief of Medicine.

It got shown when he pretty much signed a man’s death certificate that he struggled with it; there was also Cox admitting to Kelso that he could see how much the job troubled him. The clearest example is when he has a day-long conversation with an intern before he is about to get forced out about how much he both loves the job and struggles with it.

4 Goes Back To Work

After a while in retirement, Kelso announces he is going back to work in family practice to scratch the medical itch he had gotten after spending so much time at Coffee Bucks.

It is great he went back to medicine, further proving how much he loved it truly and wanted to help. By season nine, Kelso has taken a job as a Professor alongside the likes of Turk and Cox, following Enid’s unfortunate passing, getting him out of the house.

3 Friendship With Cox

Speaking of Cox, for so, so long in Scrubs, Cox and Kelso were shown to be from two different worlds, and as bitter enemies, with Cox even punching Kelso in the face at one point, with Kelso desperate to fire him.

However, when Kelso leaves the Chief of Medicine position, the two become good friends, with Kelso admitting to helping Cox’s rise up the ladder, and even recommending him to the board for the position of Chief of Medicine. They have one of the show’s most entertaining dynamics.

2 Genuinely Friendlier & Happier

Kelso has so many fantastic moments when he is not bogged down by the stress of his job, and, contrasting massively from his devilish portrayal in early seasons, he becomes a wholly nice guy.

He is the one who pushes Elliot and J.D. to get over themselves and be together; he is far kinder to Ted, he has conversations with just about everyone, never really being nasty like he used to be, highlighting happiness in him he had never had before.

1 Layered

When fans first meet Kelso, he is a pretty straightforward character, with this continuing for a good while. He was simply the big bad greedy boss stereotype, and fairly one dimensional even if he was funny.

But, as has gotten alluded to in previous entries, as time goes on, and the seasons progress out of season one, Kelso becomes a far more layered character like the rest of the central seven. He gets his own distinctive personality and stops being just a plain evil boss; there is meat on the bones of his character.
