Sealed Pokémon Card First Edition Box Set Smashes Record At Auction

An auction for a sealed First Edition Base Set booster box of the Pokemon TCG just smashed a sales record at Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Auction, with the final price set at $198,000 US dollars. The Pokemon TCG remains a popular trading card game globally, and recently announced an upcoming set that will be adding a gigantic Pikachu to the ranks of bound-to-be-sought-after novelty cards for collectors.

The original Pokemon TCG set – simply referred to as Base Set – was first released in 1999 (unless consumers were lucky enough to live in Japan, where it was around as early as 1996), and immediately became a collectible item for kids worldwide as the Pokemon craze began to truly take hold. Not every edition of the Base Set is this valuable, but a number of factors influence auction listings like the one making headlines now. First Edition Base Set means that the booster box in question is part of the Pokemon TCG’s first print run – subsequent printings lose their First Edition label. The box was also sealed and in great condition, which means all the cards inside are likely to be in what’s called “Gem Mint” condition, the most valuable grading around for rare cards.

Those factors combined with the Pokemon franchise’s absurd popularity contributed to the record-shattering sale of the First Edition Base Set booster box, as announced by Heritage Auctions. During the Comics & Comic Art Auction held on September 10, 2020, the rare First Edition Pokemon Base Set booster box fetched a ridiculous $198,000 USD when the dust settled. The previous record for this item, which was only set in 2019, was a paltry $78,000 by comparison. That means in the span of a year, the estimated value of a sealed First Edition Base Set Pokemon booster box nearly tripled.

According to Jesus Garcia, Assistant Comics & Comic Art Operations Supervisor at Heritage Auctions, this trend upwards isn’t that surprising. It simply “shows the popularity and demand for these cards show no sign of slowing down,” and that has been true not only for Pokemon, but for other long-tenured TCGs like Magic: The Gathering. The fact is, original print runs can’t really be undervalued, as they’re never happening again. The second a collector purchases one and then stores it away, the value of every other one on the market increases to match the scarcity.

Still, no one could have predicted the value of trading cards in 2020 when they were still a more novel idea in the 1990s. Between Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering, many children likely held cards worth thousands of dollars in the future while playing at school or trading friends. Now, those same cards sit preserved in collections – or auctioned off for staggering amounts of money so that they can eventually have that honor.
