Sex And The City: 10 Episodes To Watch If You Miss Carrie & Big

Sex and the City’s Carrie enjoys several prominent relationships across the series, from her brief fling with Jack Berger to her engagement to Aidan and her sometimes stilted romance with Aleksandr Petrovsky. But the show begins and ends with Mr. Big for a reason – there’s no connection across the show’s six seasons that is as electrically charged or chemistry-filled.

That being said, Carrie and Big’s relationship faces hurdles, miscommunications, and dramatic episodes so numerous they make even die-hard fans of the show want to pull their hair out. But whether or not Carrie and Big are truly good for each other, some of the show’s most iconic episodes find the pair taking pleasure in each other’s company, whether as boyfriend and girlfriend, illicit lovers, reluctant conspirators, or simply old friends.

10 “The Domino Effect” (Season 6, Episode 11)

Although it’s been five years since she met him and their relationship has seen multiple incarnations at this point, Carrie is forced to question whether Big has really changed in this sixth-season episode. She’s shocked to find out he’s in New York for a heart operation, and even moreso when he’s (temporarily) vulnerable and romantic with her following his procedure.

It’s a bittersweet moment as Carrie realizes she can’t hold out for Big’s heart to open up permanently, and it’s the pair’s last encounter before Carrie launches into her whirlwind romance with Petrovsky.

9 “Ex and the City” (Season 2, Episode 18)

One of the show’s most excruciating episodes has Carrie contemplate whether she can be friends with Big after finding out about his new relationship. At their first friendly lunch, he reveals his engagement, and a devastated Carrie storms out of the restaurant in one of the pair’s (and the show’s) most legendary fights.

The episode’s final moment strikes a triumphant tone, though, as Carrie delivers Barbra Streisand’s famous last lines from The Way We Were to a dumbstruck Big as he leaves his engagement party. Although it features an explosive conflict between Big and Carrie, it eventually finds the broken-up duo at peace and having achieved closure.

8 “Easy Come, Easy Go” (Season 3, Episode 9)

Carrie is head over heels with Aidan in this season three episode until Big shows up at Aidan’s showcase, smelling of booze and complaining of his less-than-stellar marriage. He tells Carrie he wants to get back together and surprises her at the hotel where she’s working, where she shockingly reciprocates his advances.

Although it’s not the cheeriest episode as Carrie and Big begin a doomed affair, it’s a guilty pleasure for fans to see the show’s most controversial couple back together, if under not entirely satisfying (nor morally sound) circumstances.

7 “Cock a Doodle Do!” (Season 3, Episode 18)

This is a bittersweet bonding moment for Carrie and Big as they assess the aftermath of their explosive affair earlier in the season. Big’s marriage has completely fallen apart and he despondently calls Carrie to invite her to lunch, to her surprise.

It’s an episode that considers the consequences of Big’s actions on his marriage, but also on Carrie (which, as Miranda tirelessly argues, have time and again been negative). Still, their accidental plunge into a Central Park pond outside the restaurant is a classic moment. And their decidedly platonic dissection of all that went wrong in Big’s apartment afterward – with that red wall as the backdrop – allows us to see the troubled pair in a new light.

6 “Four Women and a Funeral” (Season 2, Episode 5)

Here, Carrie finds herself falling back into Big’s arms (not for the last time in the series). When a funeral causes Carrie to ponder her bucket list, she calls up her ex and asks him to dinner. Carrie and Big exchange major bedroom eyes, but she resists temptation and screens all his subsequent calls. Sometime later she takes him to a deliberately unsexy bowling alley but ends up taking the plunge nonetheless.

This episode captures the couple at their most charming and optimistic, with a seemingly new path emerging and their old ways ostensibly behind them.

5 “The Big Journey” (Season 5, Episode 7)

This episode finds Carrie and Samantha traveling cross-country for the former’s book tour stop in San Francisco – where she will happen to see Big, now a Napa resident. Desperate for some action, Carrie kicks Samantha out of their hotel room, but it turns out a troubled Big would rather dissect Carrie’s unflattering portrayal of him in her book.

The pair’s only reunion in season five suggests a major evolution in Big’s personality and a new era where closure has truly been achieved for the flirty friends.

4 “The Man, The Myth, The Viagra” (Season 2, Episode 8)

This episode features a rare instance of Mr. Big actually coming through for Carrie in the way she yearns for. After an iconic romantic dinner at a favorite Italian restaurant of Big’s (complete with a serenade for his girlfriend) and another home-cooked date at his apartment, Carrie invites him to meet her friends. When he bails at the last minute, Carrie worries she may have fooled herself into believing in Big.

But in a genuinely shocking twist, he arrives at the restaurant. It’s one of the couple’s sweetest moments, with Carrie beginning the episode head-over-heels and ending it with her faith in her unpredictable boyfriend restored.

3 “Secret Sex” (Season 1, Episode 6)

This episode is equal parts steamy and undeniably nostalgic for fans of the show. Carrie is preparing for her first date with the man she’s been running into all over town, and is wearing the legendary nude slip that Charlotte dubs “the naked dress.” But when Big fails to introduce her to friends, Carrie becomes paranoid that he’s hiding their burgeoning relationship from the world.

It’s a chapter in the show that pulls double duty, finally realizing the much-anticipated Carrie-Big union and at the same time foreshadowing what will be the couple’s central (and seasons-long) conflict.

2 “An American Girl In Paris (Part Deux)” (Season 6, Episode 18)

Although the series finale has Big spending more time with Carrie’s girlfriends than with Carrie herself, it occupies a special place in many Carrie fans’ hearts. Carrie’s sudden move to Paris (something that she wishes Big had offered her back in season two) is not turning out nearly as she expected, and Petrovsky is not the companion she’d hoped for.

But the series’ final moments find Big turning up to rescue her in the kind of grand and unequivocal display of love that Carrie – and many fans – had always wished for. It’s a picture-perfect moment to wrap up a relationship that had been brewing for years.

1 “I Heart NY” (Season 4, Episode 18)

Although long broken up at this point, Carrie and Big share one of their most tender moments in the season four finale after she discovers he’s leaving New York for Napa. The episode is loaded with romantic moments as Carrie processes the nostalgic affection she feels for her ex and the city they share.

The night after they slow-dance to “Moon River” in Big’s empty apartment, their horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park is cut short by Miranda going into labor. Although they miss out on one last fling before Big leaves, season four leaves Carrie and Big at an all-time high.
