Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

Sex Education is returning to Netflix for season 3, and here’s what to know and remember from season 2. The dramedy was created by Laurie Nunn and originally debuted on Netflix in January 2019, amassing a total of 40 million viewers in the first month of release during its first season. Season 2 was a rather tumultuous one for Otis, Maeve, Jean, and Eric, each of whom had their fair share of troubles to contend with. As a new season approaches, there’s quite a few things — subplots, character endings from the season 2 finale — to revisit before the start of Sex Education season 3.

Season 2 of Sex Education picked up several of the storylines left hanging at the end of season 1, while also developing several of the characters that were previously in the periphery (like Jackson Marchetti). Sex Education season 3 will introduce Moordale Secondary School’s new Headteacher, Hope Haddon, who is replacing Michael Groff following his forced exit. Hope wants to reclaim Moordale’s reputation after it’s labeled the “sex school.”

While Otis and his classmates experience changes in their school and personal life, Jean must prepare for a new baby. Here are the most crucial things to remember and know from season 2 ahead of Sex Education’s season 3 premiere, including where Otis and Maeve stand in their relationship after the season 2 finale.

Maeve Admits Her Feelings To Otis (& The Deleted Voicemail Confession)

Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

To say that Otis was a jerk in Sex Education season 2 would be too kind, but he most certainly was — to Maeve, especially. In season 2, Maeve admitted she had feelings for Otis and he didn’t exactly react very well to that, accusing her of waiting until he was in a relationship with Ola to tell him how she felt. Maeve was incredibly vulnerable in the moment and Otis, suffice it to say, reacted poorly, and then goes on to cut her off after Ola gives him an ultimatum: her or Maeve. Otis’ decision hurts Maeve, who’s grown closer to Isaac, but he decides to leave her a voicemail confessing his feelings for her, telling her he loves her and everything. Isaac started liking Maeve and definitely saw Otis as competition, so he made sure Maeve never heard the voicemail, which leaves Otis and Maeve’s relationship in Sex Education season 3 likely teetering on the edge, to say the least.

Jean Discovers She’s Pregnant (With Jakob’s Child)

Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

A big part of Sex Education season 2 was the blossoming relationship between Jean Milburn and Jakob, Ola’s father. It was unexpected and delightful, but that didn’t mean he and Jean didn’t have a few kinks to work out in a bid to smooth their relationship. At the end of season 2, Jakob and Jean were at odds after the latter pushed Jakob away, kissing her ex-husband Remi. While Jean did it out of fear of intimacy, the kind Jakob seemed ready for while she was not, he told her he couldn’t trust her and didn’t want to be hurt again. This broke Jean’s heart, of course, but the revelation that she was pregnant — despite being perimenopausal and Jakob having had a vasectomy — further complicated matters. There is still hope that Jean and Jakob will get back together in Sex Education season 3, be it because of the pregnancy or despite it. It’s clear the pair still care about each other and it’s possible they’ll come to some kind of realization in the third season that could alter their relationship, for better or for worse.

Eric Breaks Up With Rahim & Starts Dating Adam

Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

Eric dated Rahim for the majority of Sex Education season 2 and while their relationship wasn’t bad, it was obvious Eric harbored feelings for Adam, who was still incapable of expressing his feelings and was still mean on occasion. Eric and Adam then spend a lot of their nights hanging out after Adam is expelled from military school, which allows them to grow closer despite Eric still going out with Rahim. While Eric is frustrated that Adam can’t even hold his hand in public (despite kissing him in secret), Adam eventually does make a public and grand gesture in front of the school when he asks Eric to hold his hand. Rahim is heartbroken that Eric chooses Adam, but Eric can’t deny his attraction to Adam, who promises that he’ll be a better person moving forward. According to the brief tidbits known about Sex Education season 3, Eric and Adam are official and going strong.

Ola Confirms She’s Pansexual & Starts Dating Lily

Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

Ola and Otis were together for a while during Sex Education season 2 and, while she gave Otis an ultimatum, to choose between her or Maeve (whom Otis clearly still liked), Ola decided shortly after that she didn’t really want to be in a relationship with Otis, after all. And it’s not like their relationship was the best anyway considering the drunken and disparaging monologue Otis had at his party. Ola ultimately realizes she’s pansexual and was developing feelings for the alien-loving Lily, whom she’d grown closer to throughout the show’s sophomore season. She breaks up with Otis to be with Lily and it will be interesting to see where their relationship goes in Sex Education season 3.

Jackson & Vivienne Forge A New Friendship

Sex Education Recap What To Know & Remember For Season 3

Jackson was a star athlete, but the pressure of being a great swimmer was starting to get to him so much that he broke his own hand to avoid having to compete. Trying to do something different with his life, Jackson auditioned to be in Moordale’s take on Romeo and Juliet, asking Vivienne to help him be ready for the role of Romeo. In return, Jackson would help Viv get the attention of her crush. What blossoms over the course of season 2 is their friendship and mutual respect for each other as both characters come into their own and grow their relationship in a lovely and organic way. In Sex Education season 3, Jackson and Viv are still friends, but they’ll have opposing views on Hope’s tactics. How that affects their friendship remains to be seen.

Aimee Is Sexually Assaulted On A Bus To School

Aimee has a horrible experience after a man masturbates and ejaculates on her while she’s riding the bus to Moordale. She’s rather traumatized after what happened and stops riding the bus because she’s terrified she’ll see the man again and that he’ll do the same thing to her. Haunted by the assault experience, Aimee starts walking to school instead, and later admits to what happened to all the other young women during detention. Unwilling to let her ride the bus alone, they — Ola, Maeve, Vivienne, Lily, and Olivia — take the bus with her in a bid to help her combat her fear. In the official synopsis for Sex Education season 3, Aimee “discovers feminism,” though it’s unclear what exactly that will entail. It’s possible Aimee will still be dealing with the ramifications of being assaulted on the bus, but time will tell how and if that will affect her relationships, including boyfriend Steve, with others in the show’s third season.
