Sex and the City changed the landscape of television by being bold when it came to discussing women’s love lives. Not only did it make discussions about serious topics like careers, procreation, and sex seem like fun over mimosas and scrambled eggs, it completely normalized them. This was in no small part due to characters like Miranda Hobbes, who was known throughout the series (and two sequel movies) for saying exactly what fans were thinking.

For a show that talked an awful lot about women and their boyfriends, she was the only one to suggest that maybe they talk about something else. The series might have focused on Carrie’s perspective, but it was Miranda’s objective observations, unfettered by a romanticized perspective on love, and with an analytical mind keen, that became associated with the audience’s viewpoint.

10 “So What, You’re Like A Fly Strip For Dysfunctional Men?”

After another one of Carrie’s break-ups with Big, she decides to give therapy a try. After a few sessions, she concludes that the problem must not be her, but the men she dates. In her mind, she doesn’t “pick the wrong guys,” they pick her.

Miranda has a hard time buying into this analogy, and wonders if Carrie really is a “fly strip for dysfunctional men” or if the problem might go deeper. Since Carrie’s the common denominator, she might have more to do with the men she picks than vice versa.

9 “I’m Impressed, Not Dumping Us For A Guy.”

When the girls all find themselves suddenly single, they decide to hit the town to enjoy each other’s company rather than pick up guys. They go dancing at a salsa club, and due to their carefree confidence, they instantly attract attention. When Samantha gets hit on by the owner, she shines him on in an uncustomary testament to her commitment to her friends.

Miranda is taken aback. Like most fans, she assumes Samantha would have wasted no time commiserating with a successful, attractive business professional like she’s done in the past.

8 “You Just Met. I’ve Had Pairs Of Pantyhose Longer.”

When Charlotte announces that she’s getting married to Trey, the girls can’t believe it. She hasn’t even been dating Trey a year, and already she’s meeting his mother and thinking about how best to orchestrate the perfect proposal.

Miranda, who doesn’t think marriage holds much water, scoffs at the decision, declaring that she has “pantyhose” that have lasted longer than the few months Trey and Charlotte have been courting.

7 “Jesus, Every Time You Get Near Him, You Turn Into This Pathetic, Needy, Insecure Victim …”

When Carrie and Miranda get into their biggest fights of the series, they’re always about Big. Miranda can’t stand to see the sort of woman Carrie becomes when she’s around him, and Miranda doesn’t want to see her get hurt. She continues this quote with, “… and the thing that pisses me off the most? That you’re more than willing to go right back for more.”

Miranda would never let Big be so emotionally unavailable if he were her boyfriend, and therefore can’t understand why Carrie allows that behavior. Plenty of fans felt like Miranda was right and Carrie wasn’t ready to hear the cold, hard truth of how much she changed for Big when he wouldn’t change for her.

6 “Did You Have A Big Plate Of Crazy For Lunch?”

When Carrie starts dating Aidan, she doesn’t know how she’s going to be able to keep her ex, Mr. Big, part of her life. She deduces that the only way to do this successfully is to have the three of them “hang out together” and try to get along.

Miranda, like many fans, couldn’t see this scenario possibly ending in any way other than in disaster. The two men couldn’t get along, not just because of their different personalities, but because they only have Carrie (and their mutual attraction to her) in common. Though Miranda doesn’t ever discuss the subject with Big, he essentially said the same thing to Carrie.

5 “You Farted, You’re Human.”

After a night of romance, Carrie “passes wind” in bed with Big and is completely mortified. She believes it’s indicative of where their relationship has gone (from passionate to flatulent), and that once a relationship has gotten to the stage where partners feel too comfortable around each other, they’ve grown too complacent.

Miranda reminds her that bodily functions are completely normal and that her sudden urge to “move to another city” over them isn’t grounded in reality. Besides, why should men be the only ones allowed to break wind without thinking their partners are going to break up with them?

4 “The Only Two Choices For Women: Witch And Sexy Kitten.”

For many women who feel trapped between being considered chaste or sexy, there seems to be no instance where they emerge as the clear winner. Sigmund Freud called this the “Madonna-Whore Complex,” in which society teaches men to find women worthy of respect, but not of sexual desire, or worthy of sexual desire but not respect, but never both.

Charlotte finds this out the hard way after she’s married and her husband won’t view her as a sexual person, and Miranda sheds light on an ugly truth many women know. Miranda uses the terms “witch” and “sexy kitten” in her analogy, but she’s speaking for anyone who has wanted to claim their sexuality for themselves and still be treated with respect.

3 “Kill Me, Please. Just Take A Sharp Object And Drag It Across My Throat.”

When Charlotte is getting excited about her upcoming nuptials, she can’t contain her excitement. She recruits the girls to help her plan her big day getting married to Trey by giving them each bridal magazines to look through. As she explains, colored “posties” indicate the gowns she “kinda likes,” “kinda really likes” and “doesn’t know if she likes.”

Miranda, having none of it, complains very loudly to the group about how ridiculous the task of finding a wedding gown is. She goes so far as to explain to Charlotte exactly how she’d like to be removed from the process – preferably by exsanguination.

2 “I Mean, If You Spend All Your Time Worrying About Leg Hair, How Can You Possibly Have Time To Take Over The World?”

Whenever Carrie and Miranda are discussing fashion magazines, they lament about how much of an impact they have on women’s self-esteem. Miranda audibly complains about how Vogue manipulates women’s feelings about their bodies, creating insecurities to make women feel like they’re “not enough” unless they purchase designer clothing.

At first, Miranda attributes it to the men involved with printing Vogue, but after Carrie points out women are also a part of the process, she concludes it’s because “Men have made women co-conspirators in their own oppression.” Regardless of whose fault it is, many fans could relate to Miranda’s exact feelings of helplessness and anger about the subject of body image.

1 “Sex. It’s The Biggest Sham Of All.”

The girls all have conflicting views about sex and marriage, but whereas Charlotte still maintains a romantic notion about it, Miranda fancies herself a cynical realist. She believes that remaining chaste until marriage is impractical, especially given that after years of waiting, the act might not be all it’s cracked up to me. She continues, “… I mean, your whole life, all you ever hear is how you’re supposed to save yourself for marriage. And then you finally do it. And you’re like, that’s it?”

Miranda points to the degree to which partners often have unrealistic expectations about intimacy that can’t be met, and that they’d do better communicating about that than silently letting resentment fester over perceived false promises.
