Nintendo Switch-exclusive game Shin Megami Tensei V’s DLC will bring back Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne protagonist Demi-fiend as a boss the player’s party can fight. Like past entries in the Persona series progenitor, the latest demon-collecting turn-based RPG’s gameplay will largely center around its boss battles, and the return of one of Shin Megami Tensei’s most popular characters as a boss is an exciting prospect for that reason.

Recently remastered for Nintendo Switch ahead of Shin Megami Tensei V’s own release for the platform, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne stars a character with no canonical name (being nameable by the player) most commonly referred to as the Protagonist. After being transformed into the glowing Demi-fiend, he’s tasked with altering the course of an apocalyptic world. It and past games are primarily built around their battling and vaguely Pokémon-like demon negotiation/fusing mechanics, which will again reappear as fixtures of Shin Megami Tensei V’s gameplay on Switch.

In a Japan-only stream, developer and publisher Atlus revealed Shin Megami Tensei 3’s Demi-fiend and other characters will be returning in SMT V in Return of the True Demon DLC fights at launch, meaning the Nintendo Switch game will allow the former protagonist and others to be fused. This content will be available for purchase at release, and it and other DLC will also be bundled in Shin Megami Tensei V Digital Deluxe Edition, which can now be pre-ordered on the Nintendo eShop for $85. Beating the Demi-fiend’s boss fight will reward players with an item called Demon-Fiend Essence, and the Return of the True Demon will also bring back classic Shin Megami Tensei 3 bosses like Matador.

The Demi-fiend’s return as a boss in Shin Megami Tensei V isn’t entirely unprecedented, having previously been fightable in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, but his appearance is bound to grab the attention of anyone who recently played SMT 3: Nocturne HD on PC, Switch, or PS4. The ability to battle and fuse characters like the Demi-fiend is a potentially strong draw for those familiar with the remastered title, but the digital deluxe edition’s extra $25 price tag may not be quite as attractive for all but those most fond and familiar with the series.

The Return of the True Demon content would be particularly impressive if it brings back the voice of SMT 3’s Demi-fiend, as Shin Megami Tensei V’s voice cast has already wowed by securing top talent from major games and anime like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Dragon Ball Z. It’s still a mystery how many gods will be rejected in the main game, but it appears there will be plenty more demons to fight and fuse in Shin Megami Tensei V’s DLC content.
