It’s not been long since the second season of Sex Education came out, but already fans are amping themselves up for the third season. Ever since the very first episode of the show came out, this progressive, boundary-breaking series fraught with teenage angst and charged with hormonal turmoil that only a highschooler can remember has stood out as one of a kind.

It’s the very quality of honesty, bordering on raunchiness, which makes viewers love the show so much. There’s a no-nonsense quality to it that says anything goes–there is nothing one could bring to the table that they should be ashamed of in the world of Sex Education, and this is made clear from the get-go in the first episode itself.

10 Adam Fakes It

The very first episode begins with a sex scene, in true Sex Education style–or so fans eventually learn.

In this particular case, it’s Adam and Amy, and the notorious situations where Adam fakes completion, causing both he and Amy to spiral into confusion and conflict for the rest of the episode.

9 Otis’s Sex Trouble

Otis has a unique relationship to his sexuality, one that is not found quite the same in other characters–although this isn’t so surprising, as the very nature of the show is that each person has their own unique sexual issues.

Otis’ situation shifts throughout the show, but at its very origin is his inability to masturbate, as is made apparent through Eric making fun of him for it and through Jean admitting that she sees his staged magazine and lotion by his bed.

8 Jean And Daniel Ing

It isn’t long into season one when Jean becomes known for her one night stands, but the very first sexual partner she is seen with on the show is no other than Daniel Ing, playing the briefly seen younger lover of Jean.

His part is so small that viewers might easily forget he was in the show at all, and that he’s the same face seen in such famous instances as Luke in Lovesick.

7 The Rumour About Maeve Originates

Many unfair and untrue rumors about Maeve circulate throughout the show, but the very first of them comes with the reveal of the nickname she acquires, as “co*k biter”, after a summer where everybody’s sexual exploits are being discussed.

6 Maeve And Amy Play Cards

It’s undeniable that the series has a retro vibe to it. The aesthetic is somewhat sepia, with a classic American tinge to it reminiscent of other recent shows on Netflix like The End Of The Fu*king World.

This old-school atmosphere is made very apparent when Amy and Maeve are found to be hiding out together playing cards, something a teenager in 2020 isn’t exactly known to do for casual fun.

5 Adam And The Sex Items

Adam’s experience in Otis’s house tells viewers a lot both about Adam and about what Otis’ life with his mother must be like.

Jean reveals that she is a sex therapist, but the extent to which this is part of their everyday life becomes apparent when Adam can scarcely enter a room without a phallic or vaginal symbol in it.

4 Jean Smokes With A Minor

Jean seems so cool and blazé about everything that one might stop to forget and consider some of her more odd behaviors, like smoking weed with a minor on her charming country back porch.

Adam hardly even knows Otis, and the moment Jean meets him viewers see her sharing a joint with him–and then going on to explain how there isn’t actually a lot of research on the effects it could have on young people. Not so cool.

3 The Viagra Issue

Adam’s insecurity about his sexual relationship with Amy leads him to take Viagra–three viagra, to be exact, and way more than is healthy.

While this puts him in a tricky situation–stuck in a cubicle hiding until the painful situation goes away–it also offers the opportunity for Otis to hone his social skills. Adam is finally able to break his tough exterior and open up about the more complex sides of himself.

2 Jean’s Sex Video

Adam’s discomfort during his interaction with Jean causes him to share a video of her with the entire school.

The video features Jean speaking explicitly about how to engage in sexual acts all while miming them on an eggplant–a video likely intended for her therapy clients, but which offers some extremely embarrassing material for Otis.

1 Otis’ First Therapy Session

Otis conducts his first therapy session in the first episode, although without truly realizing what he’s doing. When Adam is in need of help, unable to calm down about having taken viagra and spiraling about his insecurities in general, Otis channels the kind of language his mother uses with him, asking Adam to tell him more about himself, and urging him to embrace his feelings rather than deny them.

The session proves successful–at least temporarily–leading to Maeve beginning their business together.
