The new Sex Education season 3 trailer has dropped, and it teases some major romantic complications for Otis and Maeve. The British teen show, which premiered its first season in 2019, follows Otis (Asa Butterfield), the son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson) who begins his own underground sex therapy at Moordale Secondary School. Season 2 debuted in early 2020, but pandemic delays caused a longer gap before the third season, which releases tomorrow.

The will-they/won’t-they relationship at the center of the show is between Otis and Maeve (Emma Mackey). Though some feel that they are the least interesting couple in the Sex Education universe, season 2 left them off on a huge cliffhanger. Otis had left Maeve a voicemail confessing his feelings, but it was deleted by Isaac (George Robinson) before she could hear it. Unfortunately, fans who have been hoping that the couple will get together early in the season will likely be disappointed.

Netflix released a new surprise teaser, following what was previously thought to be the final Sex Education season 3 trailer. The teaser includes several dramatic moments between Otis and Maeve showing that their fight to get together isn’t over yet. In addition to scenes teasing the dissolution of the clinic after they “grew apart,” and a continued love triangle with Ruby (Mimi Keene), there is a dramatically lit nighttime scene where Maeve confronts Otis about the voicemail, which cuts off right before he’s about to tell her. This trailer teases a season that will answer a lot of the lingering questions from Sex Education season 2. In addition to the Otis and Maeve drama, it looks like there will be trouble in paradise for Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam (Connor Swindells) centering around Adam being unwilling to come out to his mother. Given the longing looks displayed by every single character in a montage at the end of the trailer, they’re not the only ones in trouble.

Sex Education season 3 looks like it’s going to be a doozy. The previous trailer showed that there will be a de facto war between staff, parents, students, and the media over the politics of sex, all of which is shaken up by the arrival of Jemima Kirke’s new headmistress Hope Hadden. Even though it will frustrate some viewers, it will hopefully be interesting to see how the prolonged thorniness between Otis and Maeve will impact the overall flow of this battle, considering they no longer seem to be willing to work together.
