Old-school martial arts fans and lovers of cultural identity parables alike rejoice: Eisner Award-winning author and MacArthur “genius grant” recipient Gene Luen Yang has been announced as the writer for a new miniseries focused on Asian-American superhero Shang-Chi. The series, which will follow the family dynamics of the Master of Kung Fu is set to hit stands this June.

Yang is best known for his 2006 graphic novel “American Born Chinese” which won several noteworthy awards and was a finalist for National Book Award, the first graphic novel to attain such an honor. In his follow-up to 2018’s New Super-Man, which featured the adventures of Kong Kenan, a Chinese National given the powers of Superman, this new series, simply titled Shang-Chi, will be drawn by Dike Ruan and Phillip Tan and looks to be a more grounded and gritty version of the character. The miniseries will come in the lead-up to the 2021 release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ring, starring Simu Liu and Tony Leung.

In an interview with The New York Times, Yang expressed his enthusiasm for taking on the character, who has often languished as a side-character in other Marvel titles. “I mean, it’s Shang-Chi. He’s probably the most prominent Asian — I guess he’s Asian-American now since he’s moved over here — Asian-American superhero.” Later the same day, he tweeted “For so long, I’ve dreamed of @simuliu playing a character from a comic I wrote. Kenan Kong hasn’t worked out (yet) so I had no choice but to sign up to write the new Shang-Chi mini-series from @Marvel!”

“The basic idea that his father is a supervillain is still there,” Yang told NYT in a brief outline of the story for the five-part miniseries. He continued that the story would revolve around Shang-Chi’s battle with his father, Zheng Zhu and the other members of his family united against him. According to a statement by Marvel: “In this new series, Shang-Chi’s fight for justice will collide with his past…With a target on his back after the revitalization of his father’s secret society, the balance of power will shift in an epic tale of succession, family, and betrayal.”

The announcement brings with it a sense that Marvel is taking the marketing for the next phase seriously overall by enlisting such major talent in the run-up to the release of the new Shang-Chi film. Yang’s experience in developing emotionally hard-hitting, yet unceasingly relatable stories that revolve around his own Chinese heritage make him an obvious choice when deciding who should continue the story of a character that may soon see the limelight. Given Yang’s excitement for the job, is it possible continuation might be on the horizon should the book succeed?

Only time will tell. Shang-Chi #1 goes on sale June 2020.
