Shazam! producer Peter Safran plays coy with regard to reports about Superman supposedly having a cameo in the film. Directed by David F. Sandberg, the flick will officially introduce Zachary Levi as the titular hero alongside Asher Angel playing his young alter-ego, Billy Batson.
Not much is known regarding the plot specifics for Shazam!. Looking at the trailers, it’s noticeably different from previous instalments from the DCEU. It’s more humorous which goes with the personality of the film’s titular hero. Following the success that was James Wan and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Sandberg and Levi have some big shoes to fill, but based on people’s reaction from the handful of sneak peaks that they’ve gotten so far, it appears that the public is excited about seeing this unique hero. Aside from meeting Shazam for the first time, fans are also looking forward to possibly seeing Superman in the film. Unfortunately, people involved in the project remain coy about the cameo.

Last week, Screen Rant was among the slew of press outlets invited to watch an editing bay preview for Shazam! wherein journalists were able to speak with Sandberg and Safran. When asked about the much-discussed Superman cameo, Safran smartly eluded the question, leaving everyone more intrigued about this rumored appearance.
Peter Safran: Yeah, when DC makes that movie I think it’s going to be great. [Laughs] You’ll definitely get to see it then. You guys will love it!
Last year, news first broke out that the planned Superman cameo in Shazam! may not be happening after it was reported that negotiations between Henry Cavill and Warner Bros. fell through. Aside from making an appearance in the Sandberg-directed flick, the same report started rumbles that it may take a while before fans see the actor back in the red cape again. Of course, since then, a couple of major developments have happened in the DCEU with the announcement of new projects, such as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, as well as the confirmation that Ben Affleck is officially out of the DCEU. Things, however, continues to be bleak with Cavill’s involvement in the franchise with no word yet regarding Man of Steel 2.
More recently, a slew of reports came out regarding this issue. First, Superman could allegedly still appear in the flick, but it won’t be Cavill. Shortly after that, a rumor came out that Cavill may have shot a Shazam! cameo but it might not be used. At this point, considering the conflicting reports, it’s hard to gauge which one is actually real. While it will definitely be a treat to see Cavill as the Man of Steel in the film, perhaps it’s best to focus on the titular hero instead and treat Superman’s supposed cameo as just a bonus.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
