SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Noelle Stevenson’s fantasy epic She-Ra and the Princesses of Power came to a close in May with its fifth and final season. In it, fans were treated to a redeemed Catra, a genuinely terrifying new threat in the form of Horde Prime, canon Catradora, and brand new looks for several characters.

She-Ra has a large cast full of unique personalities, and each character has vastly different aesthetics. The series has been praised for its character design, due to the diverse body types shown across the board. With the series behind us, it’s time to look back and appreciate the best character designs that appeared throughout the series.

10 Double Trouble

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Introduced in the fourth season is Double Trouble, a Non-Binary shapeshifter who aligns themself with the Horde – for a pretty penny. Double Trouble is known for their theatrics (they are an actor, after all) and manipulation tactics: Double Trouble understands people sometimes better than they do, as Catra learns in the fourth season finale.

Despite Double Trouble’s larger-than-life personality, their design is pretty straight-forward. Their silhouette is sleek, and the outfit is both practical and dramatic. As designs go, it helps set Double Trouble apart from their peers and sets up a stark comparison between Double Trouble’s true self, and their alter egos.

9 Bow

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Bow often serves at the heart of the “Best Friend Squad,” so it’s no surprise that one of the core motifs in his design are hearts. The color palette is an interesting combination of both She-Ra’s primary colors and Glimmer’s, further cementing Bow’s loyalty and love for his friends.

Another trademark to Bow’s appearance is his open midriff. Even in episodes where he’s shown without his armor, relaxing in a pool, Bow is shown with the crisscrossing shirt wrappings that make up his top underneath his armor.

8 Spinnerella

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Spinnerella was primarily a side character who made small appearances throughout the series, up until the fifth and final season where she and her wife, Netossa were both featured more prominently. Spinnerella isn’t a princess like the rest of the characters but has the ability to control wind which makes her a dangerous adversary.

Spinnerella’s design features lots of swirling designs, an allusion to her abilities. It’s soft pallette also matches her sweet personality. Perhaps one of the most special things about Spinnerella’s design is that she is plus-size, an unfortunately rare occurrence in media. Her necklace also appears to be a nod to her wife, Netossa!

7 Adora

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Throughout the series, one character whose design remains constant is that of series protagonist, Adora. We’re introduced to her as a soldier training in the Horde; she’s considered one of the best in her class and is promoted to Force Captain before she finds the She-Ra sword. Adora’s design doesn’t change even when her heart does: she remains in her Horde uniform.

This makes sense though, as Adora is a very practical, strategic person. Being in a uniform is where she feels most comfortable because Adora is passionate about fighting for the causes she believes in, and the outfit is extremely functional for the battles she constantly finds herself in.

6 Entrapta

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Entrapta is the most science-focused of the princesses. She’s introduced as a quirky scientist with a fondness for robots, tiny food, and First One’s tech. The last fascination ends up getting Entrapta into plenty of trouble throughout the series and even leads her to temporarily join the Horde for a few seasons where she can properly research the ancient tech.

Fittingly, Entrapta’s design has the aesthetic of a greaser: she favors light layers and a set of overalls. She pairs them with heavy boots and a set of gloves. Topping off her look is her apparently sentient hair, which she often uses to walk around on or aide her in her tinkering.

5 Queen Glimmer

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Following Queen Angella’s death in the third season, Glimmer is crowned Queen of Brightmoon – a change of responsibility that also brings a new look for the fiery young woman. Not only does Glimmer’s outfit change, but her hair also does as well. Her pink poof replaced by a slicked-back look that’s somehow colder: a fitting look given the friction between Glimmer and her friends throughout the season.

Glimmer’s appearance as queen represents the growth she’s undergone through the series and brings out a more mature, nuanced side to the character. It’s painfully apparent now with this look that Glimmer is no longer the impulsive princess we all met, but now a young woman faced with an incredible burden as the leader of the rebellion as well as a kingdom.

4 Netossa

Netossa has the ability to create energy nets, which she often uses to capture adversaries or protect allies. She’s also shown to be incredibly analytical, having figured out the key weakness of each princess, on the off chance she would need to take them down.

Netossa’s outfit represents her personality well: it’s practical and fully armored, yet comfortable. It speaks to her ability as a warrior, yet has soft edges as well – just like Netossa herself, who would do anything for her wife.

3 Mara

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

At the start of the series, Mara is vilified by Light Hope, who claims that she tried to destroy Etheria. As the show went on, it becomes clearer to both Adora and the audience that Mara actually sacrificed her life to protect Etheria from both Horde Prime and the First One’s plan to use the Heart of Etheria (which would destroy the planet, if not the universe).

When Mara is finally introduced outside of the She-Ra persona, it’s immediately clear she’s one of the best-designed characters of the series. It’s a softer, more feminine look than anything Adora would be caught in, and says so much about Mara’s personality long before fans truly get to know her. The soft design and blues fit Mara’s kind nature perfectly.

2 Catra (Season 5)

SheRa 10 Best Designed Characters

Catra’s redeemed look was possibly her best look in the entire series (though the leather jacket is always a highlight). It’s a simple variation to her appearance in the prior season, yet it’s refined appearance marked a change in everyone’s favorite morally gray cat. What truly sets this design over the edge is Catra’s new hairstyle. Although it’s not a change she herself made, it suits the character well.

The behind the scenes story also gives this design an extra nudge above the rest: as confirmed in a tweet, Noelle Stevenson included the haircut as a nod to her wife, Molly Ostertag, who sports the same hairstyle.

1 She-Ra (Season 5)

When Adora is finally able to access She-Ra again, it’s to save Catra from near-death. This connection isn’t derived from the Sword, though, but from Adora’s own superpower: love for her friends and Catra. So, naturally, an upgrade was in order. The new design is totally different from the first She-Ra design. This one highlights Adora’s growth and maturity, as well as highlighting the growing comfort in her own skin that’s crucial to her development in the final season.

As the cherry on top of this costume, Noelle Stevenson dropped some interesting behind the scenes details about the outfit, and how it represents important motifs to her friends, an idea conjured up by Rae Geiger, She-Ra’s character designer: “If you look at the outfit, she has a heart on her chest for Bow, she has wings on her shoes for Glimmer and the shape of her mask resembles Catra’s mask. So they’re all a little bit, all these parts of her costume indicate her love for her friends.”
