She-Ra and the Princesses of Power finished its acclaimed five-season run on Netflix earlier this year. The animated series rebooted the original ’80s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe spin-off that focused on Princess Adora and her struggle against the evil Horde. Among those fighting with her in the new series is Bow.

Bow is kind of the Xander Harris of the main group of heroes. But Bow is his own man as well, and one of the most interesting characters in the She-Ra mythos.

10 He Is Based On A Character From The ’80s She-Ra Run

Like most of the characters in the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Netflix series, Bow is based on an original character in the 1985 She-Ra: Princess of Power toy line.

The original Bow was in many ways the same as the new version. He was the best archer in all of Etheria and a proud warrior for The Rebellion, often fighting Horde Troopers. He didn’t have the same relationship with She-Ra or Glimmer as he does in the new show, however. He did have feelings for She-Ra, but those never really led to anything in the original cartoon.

9 He Imagines Himself In Classic Bow Garb

The new series paid homage to the original in a lot of ways. One of the funniest was in the fourth episode of season two, “Roll With It.” In this episode, Bow games out an attack on a Horde Tower and imagines the attack the way only he can. He sees himself in the costume— and mustache— of the 1980s version of the character.

This episode is full of Easter eggs from the ’80s series. All of the princesses appear in their corresponding ’80s costumes and the episode ends with the theme music from the original series.

8 He Is An Expert Craftsman

“Roll With It” also provides another insight into an aspect of Bow’s character fans may not know a lot about. This episode showed Bow to be a very good craftsman. He built all the character pieces representing the other characters for his strategy session for the Horde Tower attack.

Some of the pieces were even articulated, which would have put them among the best He-Man action figures ever. His craftiness also came in very handy when it came to his unique choice of weapons.

7 He Makes His Own Special Arrow Types

Bow is highly proficient in hand to hand combat and an excellent archer. He isn’t as technically superior as Hordak, but he is a member of the Etherian Makers Community. Bow makes all of his own arrows, which go far beyond simple sharp points.

Bow developed a series of different tips for his arrows, all of which function in different ways. Net arrows deploy nets; sonic waves issue sound waves; and stun arrows stun enemy troops. This kind of hardware puts him on par with the weapons of another famous archer, Hawkeye.

6 He Has Two Fathers

The new series kept a lot of things from the original She-Ra series, but one thing it changed was to make Bow more complex. Little was known about the origins of the original ’80s Bow, but fans of the new series discovered quite a bit about the new Bow.

He was raised in the Whispering Woods by his fathers, George and Lance. The couple raised Bow along with eleven other siblings. George had been a member of the first Princess Alliance, which unfortunately ended in defeat.

5 He Has A Lot Of Nicknames

Bow is just Bow to his family, but he has quite a few nicknames among his friends and allies. One time villain and later, ally and friend (as shown in the near-perfect She-Ra series finale) Catra labeled him “Arrow Boy.” Later on, he was just “Boy With Arrows.”

Catra wasn’t the only one to get her digs in. Huntara and an ally of hers, the Horned Goon Girl, both called him “Boy.” With an easy-going and friendly personality, Bow took all the insults in stride.

4 “Bow” Also Refers To His Violin Skills

Bow isn’t just a great craftsman and fighter, but he’s a musician, too. He displays affinity and proficiency with the violin in several episodes. In season five, where most of the best episodes of She-Ra occur according to IMDb user ratings, he put his talents on full display.

Bow picked up his love for the instrument while tagging with Sea Hawk on his sea shanty. The original ’80s Bow also played a similar instrument, though it was more of a fantastical version of the violin.

3 He Came Up With The Name “Best Friends Squad”

In She-Ra, the core gang refers to themselves as the Best Friends Squad. Bow is actually responsible for this moniker. He first mentioned it in “The Sword: Part 2” from season one. He came up with the name after the battle of Thaymor to celebrate Adora joining he and Glimmer as close friends.

The group is comprised of two eventual couples. Glimmer and Bo are friends but might be more, and Catra and She-Ra are arguably the best couple in the entire series.

2 He Also Came Up With The Adjusted “Best Friends Quad” Label

The triumvirate at the heart of the Best Friends Squad morphed over the course of the series. During the second season, when Bow wanted to include Swift Wind, he began calling the group the Best Friends Quad. This nod to the group now being a quartet didn’t exactly go over too well with Glimmer and Adora.

They continued to use the original name and did so through the eventual inclusion of Catra at the end of the series. Bow just always wanted to make everybody happy, though.

1 A Vision Of The Future Sees Him Still With Glimmer

At the end of the series, Adora sees a vision of the future. In it, Bow is older and wiser. He appears mostly the same, but is now taller and has facial hair. He also avoids wearing a complete shirt, just like his ’80s counterpart did. The most important thing in this vision was his continued relationship with Glimmer.

The two longtime friends confessed their love to each other in the season finale, beginning an uncertain romance. Adora’s vision suggests that everything works out just fine in the end.
