BBC’s phenomenal hit detective drama Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, took audiences by storm all over the world, and even though its 4th season had a tone of finality to it, fans worldwide have been clamoring for more ever since.

Although the series was exceptionally well-received in general there are those who had some bone to pick, thus going against popular opinion. These unpopular opinions fans have been expressing on Reddit might surprise a few people.

10 Sherlock Didn’t Do Justice To Watson

Martin Freeman’s adorable John Watson was an instant fan favorite and as central to the show as Sherlock himself. However, it seems that not everyone found Watson quite as endearing.

For instance, one Redditor feels that John’s behavior left much to be desired for a good part of the series. His treatment of Sherlock didn’t go down well with this fan, especially the way he behaved after his wife died, blaming Sherlock for Mary’s death when he himself hadn’t done nearly enough to save her either.

9 Mary’s Death Scene Was Overdramatic

Mary Watson was killed off in season 4 in a dramatic and tragic turn of events. This fan feels that her death scene was overly dramatized and made little sense.

Mary was killed by a shot that had actually been meant for Sherlock. She then gave a dying speech, telling John how much she loved him and Sherlock that she was sorry for having shot him earlier in season 3. The scene was tragic no doubt, but some fans found it cheesy and even boring.

8 Season 4 Wasn’t Half Bad

The BBC series’ 4th and final season received a lot of flak even from self-proclaimed fans of the show for letting the audience down.

However, there’s one fan on Reddit who felt otherwise. According to them, there was plenty to enjoy in the final season. The fan feels that there was nothing positively wrong with the season, thus making the negative criticism aimed at it somewhat unjustified.

7 The Mary Subplot Worked

Another common grievance that some fans have about Sherlock is about the entire subplot involving Mary, not just her death scene, which they feel wasn’t well-conceived. Mary was revealed to be an ex-assassin in the season 3 finale, and then, as mentioned above, killed off in season 4.

Every individual, however, is entitled to his or her perspective. Thus there are those who were happy with the Mary subplot and even considered it possibly the best part of season 4.

6 The Lying Detective Was A Good Watch

Episode 2 of season 4 of Sherlock was “The Lying Detective”, a play on the original Conan Doyle story, “The Dying Detective”. The episode saw Sherlock take down a dangerous nemesis, the philanthropist Culverton Smith who turned out to be a prolific serial killer.

The episode is generally touted as one of the weakest episodes in the series. But once again, going against the popular grain, there are those out there that love it, and would even go as far as to say that it was one of the best episodes of the show.

5 Eurus Was Great

Season 4 revolved largely around the long lost Holmes sister, Eurus, a genius who was more brilliant than Sherlock himself and far more dangerous, both to herself and others around her.

Eurus wasn’t necessarily a fan favorite. But several fans found her character fascinating and approved of the idea of the deranged genius who was in a way Sherlock’s ultimate nemesis, and his own sister.

4 Moriarty Didn’t Deserve Quite So Much Adulation

A few fans actually hated Jim Moriarty, the eccentric but brilliant criminal mastermind who remained the central antagonist throughout the first two seasons.

Now, this is a thoroughly unpopular opinion, as Moriarty was absolutely loved by most people and fans apparently couldn’t get enough of him. But although these Redditors appreciate actor Andrew Scott in the role, they feel that Moriarty was never meant to be insane in the first place and that the very essence of Holmes’ arch-rival was that he was super calm and methodical.

3 JohnLock Is Queerbait

The now-iconic BBC detective drama found a significant fan following and the purported relationship between Sherlock and John Watson was something many fans loved and shipped.

However, some fans bring up a sensitive conversation when they note that the show had been queerbaiting, i.e. essentially alluding to a potential same-sex relationship that didn’t exist to appeal to a larger audience. This is a controversial discourse but the fans feel that indicating a gay romance between two straight characters effectively ended up being offensive to the queer community since it was used to offer comic relief, which in turn could be misinterpreted as a degree of implied homophobia.

2 Sherlock Is Overrated

Overall, Sherlock became a global phenomenon exceeding the expectations of the writers and the stars themselves. It also catapulted its lead actors into overnight stardom.

However, to each his own; some fans feel that the show didn’t deserve quite as much hype as it got. This Redditor feels that the series was not nearly that good, and despite the amazing acting talents and a few good moments here and there, it could never elevate itself beyond the awful writing and simply stayed subpar. For a series that was hailed for its clever, witty writing, this is indeed an unpopular opinion.

1 Some Good Old-Fashioned Crime Solving Would Have Been Enough

Sherlock delved deep into the psychological aspects of Sherlock and John, especially in season 4 when the series became more about the darkness surrounding their personal relationships and less about the eccentric detective gallivanting around London, solving crimes.

But as it turned out, a few feel that solving crimes the good old-fashioned way would have been enough. The series didn’t have to go darker, introducing new characters like Eurus Holmes, but could have focused whole-heartedly on the detective resolving complex crimes, which was what the drama had initially been about.
