Dealing with the horror of being stuck inside, director Rob Savage managed to turn feelings of uncertainty into something demonic and frightening with his micro-budget, found-footage horror film Host. Recorded largely over the chat platform Zoom, the film gave an intimate view of a night gone horribly wrong by the accidental summoning of a malevolent spirit.
While Host has seen its fair share of accolades, the genre of found footage has still been a staple of the horror genre since it gained mainstream popularity with the release of The Blair Witch Project. Undeniably, the format holds appeal to budding filmmakers, allowing them to work on a budget within a style that already has an audience. Consequently, there have been numerous films made in the genre every year, many of them not so great. Thankfully there are many creators that prove to have a knack for the pervasive and intimate horror that comes from the first-person perspective, filmmakers who also use the genre to tell their own unique narratives.

Exploring the darker side of the web and potential dangers from interacting with various strangers, The Den predates many popular movies, such as Unfriended, in using Internet and computer screens to convey horror. The film offers a mix of styles, as it transitions into a more cinematic format to reach its grisly conclusion.

After being outed as a fraud, survivalists Tex Montana decides he will prove his worth on a trip through the cold winter forest on his own merit. The bumbling and arrogant explorer is met with a harsh reality, he does not know how to survive in the wild, and he has no clue where he is.
A clever comedy framed by the horrors of being lost in a forest, Tex Montana Will Survive lets the viewer follow a deplorable person marching towards their end with an over-confident grin. However, there is still some desire to see Tex succeed, especially as the elements start to weaken his body and make him drop his fake TV personality.
8 Skew (2011)
Bringing a camera along for a road trip, a group of friends begin to be haunted by ominous events and ghastly visions. These encounters begin to test their friendship as they are forced to explore hard truths about themselves.
A great example of jump scares used to good effect, Skew acts as the most formulaic example of what many audiences have come to expect from the genre. However, as simplistic as the premise may be, the atmosphere and ghastly visions really show ingenuity to make something terrifying with some simple trickery. As a result, there are many sequences that are likely to haunt viewers, such as the horrific runner in the fields.
7 Nightshot (2018)
Investigating an abandoned building, a host and cameraman get more than they bargained for when paranormal events cause them to flee deep into the facility. As they continue to explore, the pair realize that they are not alone and there may be a group of people behind the otherworldly happenings.
Done in a single take, Nightshot acts as an impressive feat in planning and staging a film. Through many different locations, scenarios and dialogue, the film becomes exponentially more impressive in approaching the challenge of one shot cinema. Additionally, the film does not suffer from these restraints and still imbues a dark/ominous atmosphere with a few well times scares, ensuring deeper appeal than just the concept behind filming.
6 RWD (2015)
Two friends decide they want to explore an abandoned facility in search of ghosts or at least some memorable footage. However, they are surprised to find an anomaly situated in the facility which causes time to fold in on itself, creating infinite copies of themselves on a similar path.
Starting off as a typical “bro comedy,” RWD deviates into horror as the friends become overwhelmed and targeted by versions of themselves. The real fun lies in the buildup, though, as the two friends first use the anomaly to mess with other versions of themselves experiencing the anomaly for the first time. Overall, the film uses comedic overtones to explore sci-fi horror in the found-footage format; there is nothing else quite like it.
5 The Monster Project (2017)
A recovering drug addict takes a job with a production crew, who are planning a bizarre set of interviews in a run down mansion. Believing their subject to suffer from some form of mental health issues, they soon learn that their ghoulish interviewees are, in fact, very real.
Borrowing from the world of fantasy and monster movies, The Monster Project is a fun mash-up of genres. While seeing the monsters interviewed and subsequently attack the crew makes for an amusing ride, the production is also backed by a strong protagonists made sincere through exploration of his personal struggles.
4 Savageland (2015)
A small town is wiped out, with a lack of proof as to what happened the authorities pin the blame on the lone survivor. The pseudo-documentary explores what may have actually occurred that night, and why people used the troubled man as a scapegoat in the gruesome crimes.
Taking the appearance of a true-crime documentary, Savageland offers up photo evidence and interviews to frame the horrific events that took place in a small isolated town. This approach does not really capture any of action examined by the talking heads, but there is still a great element of horror due to the survivors’ hobby: photography. Consequently, the photos that break down the events and capturing escalating violence push the dry investigative approach into a world of horror.
3 Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)
After finding a laptop, a man and his friends discover hidden files on the computer that depict real crimes. Their shocking discovery turns nightmarish when they learn the person who owns the computer wants it back, and will stop at nothing to get it.
The follow up to Unfriended may not have gotten as much attention as its predecessor, but it offers the same amount of thrills by drawing inspiration from cautionary tales from the dark web. Furthermore, the script is engaging and full of some unpredictable twists that create a tense environment through uncertainty.
2 The Houses October Built (2014)
Five friends are seeking out the best haunted attractions across America, filming their experiences at each. When the group learns of one haunt considered to be unlike any other, they begin to try to find its location while being stalked by mysterious figures.
Celebrating Halloween and all the wonderful attraction that come with it, The Houses October Built homages the holiday by spending a large bulk of the film giving a first person view of some notable attractions. The latter half of the film shifts into horror when the group finally finds the extreme haunt. As a result, viewers get both a glance at haunted attractions and a scary conclusion, making for an ideal found-footage film to check out around the Halloween season.
1 Willow Creek (2013)
A couple visiting the infamous Willow Creek explores the rumor of the Bigfoot sightings that have brought the location infamy among cryptid hunters. Deciding to spend the night camping, they soon come face to face with the creature, learning of a dark secret that explains those who have gone missing.
One of many found footage films that uses Bigfoot to scare its audience, Willow Creek is a slow burn more focused on the relationship of its subjects. However, director Bobcat Goldthwait has shown a knack for strong script work with films such as World’s Greatest Dad, which makes the time spent with the characters act to endear you to them. Consequently, fans of slow burn horror, such as The Blair Witch Project, would benefit to give this one a chance.
