Simu Liu wishes Shang-Chi appeared in The Avengers’ Shawarma post-credits scene, which ironically, was originally going to be where the character was supposed to debut. The newest Marvel actor is currently busy doing the press rounds for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings where he plays the titular character. Directed by Destin Cretton, the movie is set to premiere exclusively in theaters this Friday, September 3.

By now, Liu has already spoken repeatedly about his whirlwind casting process, including that time where he first manifested the idea of joining the MCU. It had only been days since he officially landed the role when Marvel Studios had him fly to San Diego Comic-Con 2019, where he was officially introduced to the public. From there, it took several more months before production began for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in Australia. Filming took a lot longer than usual because of the global pandemic, but they were able to safely wrap it up. Now, it’s only days before the blockbuster opens in cinemas everywhere, and based on critical reviews, Marvel Studios has another hit in their hands which couldn’t be any more ideal for Liu. But, when asked if there’s any point in the Infinity Saga’s history where he would’ve wanted Shang-Chi to appear, he chooses the famous stinger in The Avengers.

While hosting an AMA session on Reddit, Liu was asked if there’s any post-credits scene in the franchise’s history that he would’ve wanted to be a part of. The actor cites the shawarma tag in the 2012 ensemble. The Avengers is MCU’s first event film solidified Kevin Feige’s plans of interconnected storytelling as it assembled all six founding heroes of the franchise. But, there were actually plans to also debut Shang-Chi at the end of the movie, which makes Liu’s answer so much more interesting. Check out his full answer below:

Shang-Chi’s scrapped introduction in The Avengers was part of the attempt to appeal to Chinese moviegoers. Revealed in the book Feeding the Dragon, former Chinese-based DMG Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Chris Fenton recalled how they were offered to either introduce Shang-Chi or The Mandarin via a post-credits scene. Obviously, this didn’t pan out, although Marvel Studios debuted the fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3 just a year later in 2013. In any case, both characters end up waiting several more years and the Infinity Saga to wrap up before their arrival in the MCU through Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

It’s an interesting notion to think about Shang-Chi debuting in The Avengers. On the one hand, this would’ve helped pushed representation as early as 2012. While MCU Phase 1 is beloved by many, it’s also often criticized for its lack of diversity. Then again, chances are high that neither Liu nor Tony Leung, who plays the Mandarin in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, would’ve been cast for the inevitable solo movie for the hero. Considering the reviews, both actors are intrinsic in the movie’s success — at least based on reviews. So, all in all, things panned out the best way possible.
