Skype Meet Now How to Host a Video Call Without Signups or Downloads

Skype’s new Meet Now option allows people to chat without signing up or downloading the client, adding an alternative to the service’s previous setup. For almost two decades, Skype has been about building up a contact list and maintaining a back-and-forth with those people, so it’s a big step for them to embrace a more “one-off” approach to chat.

If this system sounds familiar, that’s because it absolutely is. Recently, Skype met its biggest new competitor in Zoom, a video conferencing service that has also been around for years but just had a major ascension in the public consciousness. As a program aimed at the enterprise demographic, Zoom was a natural fit for people with white-collar jobs once it became apparent that the coronavirus would force people to work from home. The app’s biggest strength is the ease with which users can create chats and invite other users. Simply put, most Zoom conferences only require the host to send out links to the interested parties, and everyone can proceed from there. It foregoes friends lists, app installs, and verifying email addresses. This system has infamously created some staggering security issues, but the accessibility of it is what Skype appears to want to replicate with the Meet Now function.

There are multiple ways to engage with Skype – the web browser version, the mobile app, the desktop app, and more – but starting a Meet Now chat is simple either way. Skype’s tutorial explains that the host simply needs to open Skype on any platform, and select Meet Now, which should be located near the New Chat button on the main screen. That will open a menu with options for the invite link, giving choices to share the link with Skype contacts, through email, or by copying the link URL to manually send. Anyone who receives the link can click it and decide to join the conversation as either a guest or by signing in with a Microsoft account. Having Skype installed is not a requirement.

Options within a Skype Meet Now Chat

The interface for Meet Now isn’t too different from what people would expect from Skype (or Zoom). It includes the necessary options like a mute button, a button to toggle video, chat bubbles to indicate who’s speaking, and a settings button. Meet Now also has more modern bells and whistles such as screen sharing and the option to record the call. Users can produce an invite link from the chat itself, as well as engage in text chat. Skype says the service will keep recorded chats and chat media, including text and images, for at least 30 days.

Given that Skype is switching from being a much more walled-off service, in terms of how it handled video chats, it’s unlikely that it’ll face the same security struggles Zoom has battled in recent weeks. With that in mind, Skype’s traditional group chat option, which requires inviting verified Skype users rather than producing a public link, still exists and will likely continue to be Skype’s primary function. Still, Meet Now makes Skype more directly competitive with Zoom, and gives people turned off of the latter due to its negative press a viable, more secure alternative. Just be careful about who receives those invite links.
