Bethesda’s Skyrim has been a mainstay of the RPG genre since its release in 2011, as the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls franchise. A major aspect of the game is its richly detailed conversational options, allowing players a wide range of options when it comes to choosing their preferred mode of play.

Many NPCs in Skyrim can be “spoken to”—by means of dialogue boxes—further increasing immersion. Naturally, there are hundreds of lines that players hear over the course of the game, many of which are repeated so often that it’s nearly impossible to forget them. In some cases, however, the quotes are memorable because of the impact they leave behind.

10 “Wait… I Know You.”

The various Holds scattered across Skyrim are protected by their respective guards, who paradoxically alternate between ignoring the Dragonborn’s crimes and making immaterial statements (usually out of the blue).

One of their classic gems is “Wait… I know you,” a vague threat that loses its intimidatory quality after hearing it uttered over and over again, not to mention cementing it in the player’s memory. At least it becomes hilarious after the point of saturation is reached. For some players, anyway.

9 “A Challenger Is Near!”

The Daedric class known as Dremora are occasionally opponents for the Dragonborn, and unnerving ones at that—especially when they deliver menacing lines like “You will meet your end, Mortal!”

On the other hand, the Dragonborn can Conjure these entities via spellwork or the Sanguine Rose, in which case the Dremora almost always pops into existence with the iconic “A challenger is near…”, before running off to face the “challenger” in question. It’s not a line that players are likely to forget.

8 “Do You Get To The Cloud District Very Often? Oh, What Am I Saying—Of Course You Don’t.”

Nazeem is an NPC who roams Whiterun making derogatory remarks to and about other people, while simultaneously praising his alleged achievements, such as “advis[ing] the Jarl on political matters,” because his “input is invaluable, of course.”

However, Nazeem’s most famous dialogue remains, “Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh, what am I saying—of course you don’t.” This quote is so brazenly irritating that many players relish finding inventive ways to kill the character just for that one line.

7 “No Lollygaggin’.”

Skyrim guard dialogues are so common and so repetitive that they have achieved peak Skyrim meme status, one of which is the simple two-word phrase, “No lollygaggin'”. Interestingly, this doesn’t sound like an actual law that a Jarl would permit, let alone enact, so it’s more likely the guards’ way of asserting their dominance over the citizenry.

In any case, they love nothing more than to mill around the metaphorical watercooler and relate silly anecdotes instead of doing their assigned tasks, so they aren’t exactly setting any standards for decorum. It’s the rareness of the term “lollygaggin'” that makes the quote so catchy.

6 “I Am Sworn To Carry Your Burdens.”

Lydia the Housecarl is a beloved character in the world of Skyrim, not least because of her unmitigated resolve and dedication to the Dragonborn’s adventures, however tiresome she might find them. And yet, it seems as though Lydia has an internal limit to her tolerance.

She rarely admits her anger outright, instead couching it in her nebulous brand of sarcasm whenever the player asks her to haul their occasionally ill-gotten loot. She is “sworn to carry your burdens,” but the cadence of the quote makes it painfully clear that she would rather be doing something else.

5 “Never Should Have Come Here.”

A line common to many enemies of the Dragonborn is “never should have come here,” which sounds aggressive but falls flat in terms of actually carrying out their threat. Antagonistic NPCs use it when the player steps into their algorithmically designated territory.

That said, they usually tend to perish as soon as the words spill out their mouths, so their warning is mostly pointless. The best part about this quote, though, is that the player gets to hear it in a variety of voices, each with its own memorable twist.

4 “Skyrim Belongs To The Nords!”

The Nords like to claim that “Skyrim belongs to” them, which is, of course, an audacious claim to make regarding a land that’s home to a wide variety of races, human or otherwise.

There is some merit to their assertion in that they are native to Skyrim, but this particular quote reeks of in-universe racism. Players remember it mainly because it’s a slightly less potent version of the famous Nord battle cry: a power akin to the Dragon Shouts, but can be used only once a day.

3 “What Is Better—To Be Born Good, Or To Overcome Your Evil Nature Through Great Effort?”

Skyrim doesn’t pretend to be a philosophical discourse, but the fandom has extracted its own meaning from their playthroughs. Most NPCs, while interesting and multi-dimensional, do not verge on the spiritual realm inhabited by Paarthurnax, an ancient and wise Dragon who lives atop the Throat of the World.

As he explains the history of Skyrim to the Dragonborn, he poses this seemingly rhetorical question. Paarthurnax probably hopes that the answer will give him the closure he needs, redeeming him for inflicting so much destruction and suffering during the Dragon War. His quote (and storyline) will be remembered by fans for a long time.

2 “I Used To Be An Adventurer Like You.”

If there is one quote that defines Skyrim for a non-gamer audience, it’s a random guard blaming their current career status on having taken “an arrow in the knee.” An empty boast with as much depth as a tankard of mead—but it cannot be proven false, and that’s what makes it so unforgettable.

The guard then goes on their merry way, believing that they’ve convinced the literal Dragonborn that they also “used to be an adventurer”. That is until the player happens to accidentally nudge them, prompting the guards to reiterate the same old tale.

1 “I Fight… Because I Must.”

Players might choose between the two warring factions in Skyrim, the Imperials and the Stormcloaks, depending on various factors (or none at all), but Ulfric’s dominating presence cannot be denied. He becomes a criminal after assassinating High King Torygg, but he is quickly restored to power when Alduin prevents his execution.

As the current Jarl of Windhelm, Ulfric is highly respected by his soldiers, largely because he fights alongside them in battle. Among his more popular quotes is “I fight… because I must,” a line that concludes a rousing speech he delivers. His survival is insignificant in the long run, but his words are not.
