Skyrims Toughest Bosses (That Arent Dragons)

There are dozens of different enemies to be encountered in Skyrim, among which are quite a few bosses that prove more of a challenge to take down than normal battles. Skyrim’s dragons are perhaps the most notorious of these, given their role in the game’s main storyline, but there are a number of enemies that are just as difficult – or perhaps even more challenging – despite not being part of Skyrim’s iconic dragon fights.

Like many similar role-playing games, Skyrim’s enemies function with a sort of hierarchy of difficulty. For example, bandits are arguably one of the most common enemies found in the game. At level one, players are likely to encounter simple Bandits or Bandit Outlaws. At around level 20, Bandit Plunderers and Bandit Marauders are more common instead. These higher-level enemies have more health, stamina, and often better loot. There are also unique enemies, like The Forgemaster, a powerful Dwarven Centurion encountered at the Aetherium Forge.

Bosses in Skyrim are oftentimes the most powerful enemy in a given location, such as a dungeon, or an otherwise notable character in one of the game’s many storylines. Two of Skyrim’s story-heavy DLC, Dragonborn and Dawnguard, added in additional bosses to go alongside new questlines. Not all of these enemies are created equal, though, and some encounters may prove to be challenging for even the most seasoned Skyrim players. Here are some of the most difficult encounters in Skyrim.

Skyrim’s Dragon Priests

Skyrims Toughest Bosses (That Arent Dragons)

The Dragon Priests are a series of undead enemies scattered throughout Skyrim, and there are eight named enemies in total, although more were later added with the addition of Skyrim’s Dragonborn DLC. Killing each one provides players with a unique mask, each of which bears a distinct enchantment. Each priest sits at around level 50, meaning that new players in particular will have a hard time taking them down.

Dragonborn DLC’s Miraak

Skyrims Toughest Bosses (That Arent Dragons)

Miraak is considered by some players to be the hardest boss in Skyrim thanks to the many Dragonborn abilities he boasts, all of which can easily rival that of the player character. Add in the fact that he’s capable of restoring his health using dragon souls and the battle against Miraak in the Dragonborn DLC is easily one of the more challenging and lengthy fights in Skyrim.

Dawnguard DLC’s Vampire Lord Harkon

Skyrims Toughest Bosses (That Arent Dragons)

Like Miraak, Vampire Lord Harkon – one of the primary antagonists in Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC – is capable of restoring his health at several points throughout the battle. Add in his resistance to frost magic and his immunity to several different varieties of attack and he becomes even more difficult to defeat. Players are best off staying at far range and besting him with fire attacks.

Morrowind Easter Egg Boss Karstaag

First introduced in Morrowind’s Bloodmoon DLC and then brought over to Skyrim thanks to the Dragonborn DLC, Karstaag is a frost giant that serves as something of an Easter egg for dedicated Elder Scrolls fans to find. As a level 90 enemy, one who’s resistant to just about every type of damage save for fire, he’s one of the most difficult encounters in all of Skyrim.
