Smartphone Cameras Are About To Get A Big Upgrade

Corning manufactures the glass that protects most flagship smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S and Note series, among many others. While there is always a desire for greater strength, without Corning’s advanced glass formulations and manufacturing capabilities, broken phones would be much more common.

With 170 years of experience in the glass industry, Corning was once known for its Pyrex baking dishes that boast the ability to go directly from the freezer to the oven. Corning sold off its Pyrex bakeware and Corelle dishware brands to focus on high-tech glass materials for mobile technology, fiber optics for communication, automotive glass, as well as other advanced and specialized uses. It currently dominates the smartphone glass manufacturing industry.

Corning recently announced an advancement in smartphone glass technology, calling its new variant “Gorilla Glass with DX” and “Gorilla Glass with DX-Plus,” with DX representing an outer coating. The goal of this new formulation is to improve smartphone camera performance. The effect of the glass is important since light must pass through the protective outer layer before entering the camera lens, which might cause unwanted reflections. Antireflective coatings exist, but are prone to scratches, potentially marring a photograph more than the reflections would. That is why those coatings are normally used only on the inner surface. With the new advances, an anti-reflective coating can be applied on the outside of the glass as well. Corning also produced a video about the new glass as seen below.

How Corning’s New Glass Helps Photos

Corning’s best smartphone glass uses the Gorilla Glass brand with its newest Victus glass, representing its toughest in-house formulation. The iPhone 12, however, uses Apple’s Ceramic Shield glass that was developed in partnership with Corning, advancing the strength of Gorilla Glass even further. It isn’t known yet if Apple will take advantage of the advances made with Gorilla Glass with DX-Plus, but Corning did state that Samsung would be the first company to use this advanced technology in glass that covers the camera of a smartphone.

Corning explained that reflections from a camera’s glass cover typically reflect 5% of available light, which limits the quality of a photograph. Its latest product reflects only 2% of light, allowing 98% to pass through the camera lens. This will reduce ghosting, which might appear as a glow around bright lights. In a video demonstration, Gorilla Glass with DX-Plus appears to match the scratch resistance of sapphire glass, which is used on Apple’s iPhone 12 camera covering, while enjoying the same reduced reflections of its DX coating. Corning’s Gorilla Glass with DX will improve smartphone photography and Gorilla Glass with DX-Plus will approach the level of scratch protection provided by the much more expensive sapphire glass.
