Sofia Vergara Cast as Drug Queenpin Griselda Blanco in Netflix TV Show

Sofia Vergara will lead Griselda, a new Netflix series about the female head of a major Colombian drug cartel. Vergara is one of the most successful actresses working in Hollywood, known for starring on ABC’s popular comedy Modern Family as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett throughout the series’ 11-season run. She’s starred in live-action and animated films, including New Year’s Eve, The Smurfs, and The Emoji Movie, and she currently serves as a judge on America’s Got Talent.

Variety reports that her next project will be a Netflix series about the businesswoman Griselda Blanco that Vergara will star in and executive produce. Vergara will portray Blanco, a Colombian drug trafficker who played a major role in establishing the Miami cocaine trade from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Vergara has been developing the series for eight years with Luis Balaguer through their production company Latin World Entertainment. Here’s Vergara’s statement on the project:

Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about. We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric [Newman], Andrés [Baiz] and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen.

Ingrid Escajeda has been tapped as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Baiz will direct every episode. Despite rumors speculating a potential series connection with Narcos, another show about drug cartels, the story is unrelated. Baiz, Newman, Doug Miro, and Carlo Bernard, all of whom worked on Narcos, will also executive produce Griselda alongside Vergara and Balaguer.
