Sonic And Tails Eventually Became Enemies

Family has a way of complicating things, especially when a family has been missing for over a decade (or roughly 170 issues). It also doesn’t help when that family suddenly appears with some new philosophical ideas that clash with their home world’s way of life–and want to do something to spark change. That’s mostly what fueled the opposition between Sonic the Hedgehog and his best buddy Tails in Archie Comics’ discontinued comic book series.

Although the blue hedgehog and two-tailed fox had been friends for quite some time, the duo began to drift apart once Tails’ parents came back into his life. For 12 long years, both of Tails’ parents had been the “guests” on an alien planet ever since its inhabitants restricted all travel to and from Sonic’s planet Mobius. Luckily, Sonic stumbled upon them in issue #129 because he didn’t arrive there by normal means. He had been transported light-years away from Mobius, all thanks to the Xorda, and eventually found his way to the alien planet Tails’ parents were held captive on.

Unfortunately, external forces outside of their control prevented the elder foxes from arriving on Mobius until issue #170 of Archie Comics’ continuity. But when they finally did, it only took eight issues before Tails turned on Sonic. Their disagreement derived from the fact that Sonic’s people participated in monarchism under the banner of the Kingdom of Acorn. Having been absent for over a decade, Tails’ parents had the opportunity of being exposed to other political systems and eventually came to see the merits of democracy. Tails’ parents wanted their family and friends to experience all of the greatness that liberty and freedom entails, but their endeavors garnered an unwelcome effect.

While well-intentioned, their attempt turned violent, and Tails’ parents were soon thrown in jail for committing treason against the crown. Tails wasn’t having any of that, so he decided to break his parents out. Sonic wasn’t going to have any of that. Upon his arrival to the prison, Sonic realized that Tails had been a very busy little fox, having already set his parents free. The confrontation wasn’t a pleasant one, and before long, the former dynamic duo descended into violence.

Although family was a major contributing factor towards Tails resorting to criminal activities, the two-tailed fox was also fueled by Sonic’s past transgressions against him, and the anger that he’d been bottling up inside himself finally burst and manifested in an inexorable flurry of punches and kicks. All of Sonic’s efforts to appease the enraged fox failed miserably and just ended up stoking the fire within him. Tails did quite a number on his former idol, too, due to him possessing the powers of the Chosen One. While getting smacked around, Sonic mentioned that he would’ve tried to save his parents had Tails waited long enough for him to formulate a plan. It’s unclear whether Sonic was telling the truth, but him later apologizing for his past selfish, hurtful behavior eventually quelled Tails and the two eventually made up. As for what happened to Tails’ parents? Start reading the series and find out!
