STALKER 2 Auctions Off NFTs Of InGame NPCs Modeled After Fans

The latest game to get in on the NFT craze is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, which will auction off NFTs of in-game NPCs modeled after fans, who will of course be paying for the privilege. NFTs have found explosive popularity recently in various internet circles, and while some think they’ll make games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint worse, more and more video game companies are taking the initiative to incorporate NFTs into their titles. So, despite the criticism, they may be here to stay.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was first announced at E3 2018, and developer GSC Game World was somewhat quiet about it until last year. It gave even more detail—as well as a release date—at this year’s Xbox E3 showcase. The long-awaited full sequel to 2007’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl looks to be in much the same vein as its predecessor, with creepy monsters and bleak Russian environments aplenty. While gamers might look forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s branching story and multiple endings, some may not be quite as excited about the game’s NFT plans.

A new report from Polygon details the NFT plans, which involves a series of what GSC Game World calls “item-drop auctions,” three of which will be for the rights to be inserted into the game as an NPC. These NPCs, dubbed “metahumans” by GSC Game World, will have what are likely minor roles in the game, with DMarket, the blockchain on which these sales will take place, claiming, “whether this will be a bartender, a comrade, or an enemy, the NFT owner will be there for everyone to see.” A portion of each “metahuman” sale will go to as-yet-unspecified charities. The NPCs will be reproductions of their buyers, with GSC Game World working with the buyers to model the NPCs after them. Previous NFT announcements from companies like Ubisoft have had gamers missing the dislike button on YouTube, but perhaps this one will garner more positive attention.

Whether gamers like them or not, NFTs are gaining more and more of a foothold in the video game industry. Some companies, like Valve and Epic Games, have bucked the trend by removing games with NFTs from Steam and refusing to develop Fortnite NFTs, respectively, but other companies have announced plans to ride the NFT wave. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 NFT is a bit more significant than some others, though; while some game NFTs have just been static art pieces, this NFT will put buyers into the game, making them known to everyone who plays S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. That has a bit more weight to it than a cosmetic in-game item, and so may appeal to gamers who might otherwise be uninterested in NFTs. Of course, the environmental and logistical concerns around the concept could still be major obstacles to some.

Even as the concept draws more and more criticism, NFTs keep creeping into video games. EA has hinted at NFTs in FIFA 22, and if this S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 announcement is any indication, they won’t be the last. Many wonder how long this NFT craze will last, though. It’s entirely possible that this time next year, NFTs will have fallen out of favor. For now, though, they remain a cultural battlefield in the video game industry.
