Sonic Movie Redesign Reportedly Cost $5 Million Or Less

The redesign of Sonic for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie reportedly cost $5 million or less to do. The upcoming film from Paramount Pictures is adapted from the video game series of the same name. The story follows the little blue hedgehog, voiced by Ben Schwartz, as he teams up with a man named Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to help prevent the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from taking over the world by using Sonic’s powers.

The original trailer for the film was released back in late April and was met with a flurry of negative responses from fans due to Sonic’s design being a little too realistic. The backlash was so extreme that the film’s director, Jeff Fowler, took to Twitter to announce that the character would be getting a redesign. It was also announced that the film would be delayed by three months in order to give the animators enough time to do the character justice. Now, a new trailer for the film dropped last week that featured the character’s brand new look, which was far more faithful to his video game origins, and fans have rejoiced at the outcome. But, many people have wondered how much it cost to go back and reanimate the iconic character and if it’ll be worth it when the film releases. Apparently, the number is far less than what was expected.

According to IndieWire, a source close to the film’s production team estimates that “the character redesign cost Paramount less than $5 million.” The source went on to say that “the VFX work on the film was far from completed by the time the decision was made to delay the film and redesign Sonic,” adding in that, “the only Sonic VFX that were fully completed were reportedly the ones seen in the first trailer.” A couple of days ago, a tweet from a user named TRAFON alleged that the redesign cost was around $35 million, but that cost was never confirmed. The source was quick to debunk rumors by explaining “any rumor alleging the redesign made the “Sonic” VFX team suffer is far from true.”

Not long after Sonic’s new trailer debut, Fowler was quick to take to Twitter to thank fans for the positive response. Fans were elated to see the character return to his classic, cartoonish, video game form. And, not only that, but his style now fits perfectly with Schwartz’s animated and energetic voice-over of the character. Even Carrey’s goofy take on Dr. Robotnik now fits the overall tone of the movie, proving that Sonic the Hedgehog may be finding its stride after all.

The Sonic redesign is proof that, sometimes, fan feedback can be helpful when creating something. Fowler listened patiently to what fans thought of the original design and what they’d rather see, no matter how negative, and then acted on it. It’s an admirable thing to do, and so far it looks like it’s worked out well for him and the Sonic team. Hopefully, fans’ appreciation for the redesign will be reflected at the box office once Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theaters next year.
