A recent tweet by a Sega representative shed some light on the company’s stance on Sonic The Hedgehog fan games, revealing that it mostly has no issue with them – so long as their creators aren’t trying to turn a profit. With the most recent official games in the Sonic franchise being 2017’s Sonic Mania and 2019’s Team Sonic Racing, fans are no doubt increasingly more eager for new Sonic content, and unofficial games have long helped fill in the gaps between releases.

The next game in the Sonic franchise is heavily rumored to be a modern remake of Sonic Colors, reportedly set to be released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One soon. Although there has been no official announcement of a remake by Sega, the rumors were started by a French game retailer’s listing for “Sonic Colors Ultimate.” The flames were further fanned by another listing from a German localization and dubbing studio, which has since been quietly removed.

Responding to Sonic fans’ questions on Twitter, franchise social media manager Katie Chrzanowski finally revealed the Sega’s official stance on fan games involving the blue hedgehog. She reassured them that Sega “usually* has no issue with y’all using our blue boy to hone your art and dev skills,” as long as those fan games are not monetized in any way. Chrzanowski goes on to point out however, that the use of the asterisk in her tweet is due to “legal reasons.” This suggests that not all fanmade content is considered okay even if it’s free, though the overall sentiment appears to be that Sega isn’t interested in actively fighting the fan game scene. Chrzanowski also noted that fan game donations (as opposed to purchases) are considered a “tricky grey area” and that the best course of action to avoid scrutiny from Sega would be to avoid any form of payment altogether if possible.

Hey Sonic fans – I appreciate you all reaching out with concerns over fan games and monetization! So long as no profit is involved, there is usually* no issue with y’all using our blue boy to hone your art and dev skills. *((for legal reasons I can’t promise all content is ok))

Sega’s acceptance of Sonic fan games has been met with wide praise by fans, and is a stark contrast to Nintendo, notorious for being incredibly protective and litigious over its IPs. While Nintendo is widely known to be the reason for the removal of hundreds of fan games, such as Pokémon Uranium and Metroid fan game AM2R, Sega was also not always so accepting, having forced the removal of Streets of Rage fan games in the past. More recently, however, Sega brought in top modder talent to work on Sonic Mania, which was officially released as a full-fledged Sonic game to major critical acclaim.

Sonic The Hedgehog fans will no doubt be relieved to hear Sega’s gentler stance on the portrayal of everyone’s favorite hedgehog, as this indicates that the Sonic modding and ROM hack scene will continue to be respected by the publisher. Although there are some understandable limits in place and the rules are completely up to Sega’s (and the law’s) interpretation, it’s a nice change to see fans being supported instead of punished for their creativity.
