Thanos Was Right Makes The Avengers Assembling In Phase 4 More Difficult

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2.

The “Thanos was right” argument is still pervasive in Hawkeye, and it will make re-assembling the Avengers in MCU Phase 4 much more difficult. Marvel Studios is moving on from the events of the Infinity Saga and laying the groundwork for its next overarching narrative. But it doesn’t seem like the MCU will be able to escape the Mad Titan, as Thanos’ snap remains a contentious topic in the universe.

As part of Marvel Studios’ attempt to make their mark on the small screen, the Hawkeye series debuted with a two-episode premiere that effectively establishes the show’s premise. Jeremy Renner returns as Clint Barton in his first headlining MCU project after being in the universe for more than a decade. Aside from tackling his personal story, the show also debuted a brand new hero in Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Due to a slew of incidents, the pair found themselves working together against the Tracksuit Mafia.

Since Hawkeye is starring an MCU founding character, there have been several references to the larger universe — at least in its first two episodes. Aside from the flashbacks to some of the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ big missions, not to mention the existence of “Rogers: The Musical,” there were also several references to Thanos, including the argument that he did nothing wrong. While the vast majority who learned of the Mad Titan’s misguided mission to sustain the universe by snapping half of its life rightly marked it as essentially genocide, not everyone shared their sentiments, with others siding with the purple villain regarding the matter – some no doubt ironically, but likely some more seriously. The fact that some are still fully convinced that Thanos did nothing wrong more than a year after the events of Avengers: Endgame makes the Avengers’ inevitable re-assembly more difficult. There are people who remain convinced that the decimation was for the better, and that reversing the snap was a bad call. So, aside from just figuring out the official Earth’s Mightiest Heroes line-up in Phase 4, the Avengers would also have to prove that their decision to undo the Blip was justified.

While Avengers: Endgame ended on a high note, with families and friends reuniting, Marvel Studios is delving deeper into the unforeseen ramifications of reversing the snap. As it turns out, it also has its downsides. WandaVision showed the chaos that ensued immediately after those who were affected by the decimation returned. Meanwhile, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier further delved into the situation by tackling how governments around the world have been scrambling to deal with the sudden influx of people. Eternals even floated the idea that Thanos’ snap was for the better as it delayed the Emergence. These tarnish the Avengers’ public image as some would argue that their actions caused these new issues. Even when it’s taken into account that there’s still a significant chunk of society that supports the heroes – as evidenced by the success of “Rogers: The Musical” which celebrates Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) legacy – it’s worth noting that half of the original Avengers are no longer around. So the new line-up will still have to earn people’s trust. This would be difficult since some of them aren’t established public figures yet like Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), while others are dealing with their bad public image – the latter roster including Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Ultimately, however, the Mad Titan was wrong. While his intentions weren’t entirely evil, it still didn’t give him the right to play god and decide for the universe. The new Avengers’ task is to make naysayers realize this reality. Otherwise, they can also just prove that just like the old line-up, their priority is always to keep humanity safe.
