Sonic The Hedgehogs Ending Promises A More Video GameAccurate Sequel

The ending of Sonic the Hedgehog teases a sequel that will be more video game-accurate. The live-action/CGI-hybrid film hails from Paramount as they attempt to turn SEGA’s iconic blue speedster into a new big-screen franchise. With Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, the film follows the hedgehog’s journey to stop running from his past and save the town and people of Green Hill from Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

Even though Sonic the Hedgehog is a family-friendly film made with a younger audience in mind, Sonic has become one of the most recognizable video game characters since he debuted in 1991. As a result, there are fans of him and his game franchise that wanted to see Sonic faithfully adapted for the movie. That was one of the reasons why the initial design for Sonic received so much backlash and prompted the redesign that is closer to what fans expect the Blue Blur to look like. With a better design featured throughout Sonic the Hedgehog, the majority of the film follows Sonic and Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) traveling to San Francisco to reclaim Sonic’s rings – which have the power of teleportation – before Robotnik can capture the hedgehog.

This road trip story leads to an action-packed ending filled with super speed chases and Sonic determining where he wants to spend the next part of his life. But, Sonic the Hedgehog’s ending and post-credits scene set up a sequel, just in case the film does well enough to launch a franchise. Paramount has yet to announce that another movie will come, but the final moments of the first film show how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could be more accurate the video games.

How Sonic The Hedgehog’s Movie Ends

Once Sonic, Tom, and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter) arrive in San Francisco, it doesn’t take long for them to get Sonic’s rings back. Since he has been discovered and is endangering the lives of the people he cares about, Sonic is planning to leave Earth behind and spend the next chapter of his life in Mushroom Hill Zone. Before he makes this journey though, Dr. Robotnik arrives and attacks. Sonic uses one of the rings to transport Tom and Maddie to safety in Green Hill, but then races Robotnik around the world. They travel through China, Egypt, and a few other locations before Sonic barely makes it through another ring and ends up in Green Hill too. The small town serves as the setting for the final confrontation, where a supercharged Sonic knocks Robotnik through a ring to Mushroom Hill Zone.

After saving the day, Tom and Maddie’s lives begin to go back to normal and are visited by members of the United States government to thank them for not divulging the details of their time with Sonic or Robotnik. They tell the government that they have had no contact with the alien hedgehog since that night, but they are covering for Sonic instead. Tom and Maddie surprise Sonic by transforming their attic into his new home so he doesn’t have to live in a hole in the forest anymore. If the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise continues past this point, another visit to Green Hill, Minnesota will be in order.

Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik Is Trapped In Mushroom Hill Zone

Sonic The Hedgehogs Ending Promises A More Video GameAccurate Sequel

Throughout most of Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik is not quite the same character that fans of the games have come to expect. The brilliant but crazy scientist does not yet have plans for global domination or an obsession with creatures, and instead is recruited by the government to help find the cause of the massive electricity outage that Sonic caused. It is only after encountering Sonic and discovering the unlimited power that exists within his quills that Robotnik zeroes in on wanting Sonic to power his machines and future plans. And thanks to the reveal that he’s left in Mushroom Hill Zone, he can be a more accurate version of himself in a sequel.

In just this single, short sequence, Sonic the Hedgehog alters Robotnik’s appearance to better match his video game counterpart. Instead of a finely groomed full head of hair and mustache, Robotnik has shaved his scalp and his facial hair has become unruly. This is the Robotnik that fans recognize and he doesn’t want to stay in Mushroom Hill Zone forever. He still has one of Sonic’s powerful quills and says he’ll find a way off the planet before Christmas. Robotnik even has ties to Mushroom Hill Zone in the games, as he was stationed there in Sonic & Knuckles and develops a weather machine that rapidly changes the climate. The frequent changes would’ve destroyed Mushroom Hill Zone if Sonic and Knuckles didn’t stop him. Robotnik destroying or conquering other worlds could be a storyline that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could explore.

Tails Comes To Green Hill To Get Sonic

The final tease that Sonic the Hedgehog delivers though is that Sonic’s best friend and sidekick Tails is joining the party. The post-credits scene shows Tails emerge on a cliff overlooking Green Hill from one of the teleportation rings. He has a scanner that is believed to be tracing the hedgehog and says that he hopes he isn’t too late. Tails then uses his two tails to fly into town and presumably recruit Sonic to help him on a new adventure.

As the Sonic video game franchise evolved, Tails has become the most recognizable member of Sonic’s friend group. He was introduced in 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and has been a staple of the franchise ever since. His debut in this post-credits scene indicates that he will also be a major character in a potential movie sequel. There may still be some mystery left in regards to the plot or his relationship with Sonic, but Tails will once again be used to help evolve Sonic’s story in a new form of media.

How Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Can Deliver On The Promise Of The Ending

One way that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 can deliver on these teases is by expanding the world. This movie showed that Sonic has a map to different worlds that he can visit beyond Earth, but it only barely shows Mushroom Hill Zone at the end, while the original Green Hill Zone featured in the opening. There are so many other levels or zones from the Sonic video games that can be introduced in a sequel, and going to these different worlds will literally give Sonic the Hedgehog 2 new territory to explore that are unique to this franchise. These other locations could even give a sequel the chance to put Sonic’s speed to use in different environments and situations.

In addition to new zones, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also has the ability to introduce more of Sonic’s supporting cast. Tails is the only one teased in Sonic’s post-credits scene, but he can be the doorway for others to join. Tails and Sonic are normally friends with Knuckles, so the red Echidna could be featured in the sequel too. Meanwhile, Robotnik having one of Sonic’s quills and plenty of time on his hands could allow him to create Shadow the Hedgehog – who is created by Robotnik’s grandfather in the games – and take on an antagonistic role in the sequel. Knuckles and Shadow don’t have to be the only new additions either, as Amy Rose the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, Rogue the Bat, and others could be included as well.

With all of the set up done in Sonic the Hedgehog’s ending, the potential for a more video game-accurate sequel is clear. It will be up to those involved in a potential follow-up film to deliver on this promise, but the franchise is now positioned to move beyond the suburban life that was present through this film. Sonic’s adventure can still start in Green Hill with the Wachowski’s, but Robotnik being left in Mushroom Hill Zone and Tails’ arrival on Earth points to bigger – and hopefully better – adventures in the future.
