Sonic Trailer Suggests He’s An Alien Not A Hedgehog

The Sonic the Hedgehog trailer suggests that the protagonist is a creature from another planet. Before Paramount released the trailer, there was a lot of discussion on how the film would play out. Video game movies in Hollywood have historically not been received well. This year sees the release of two video game films: Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Whereas Detective Pikachu has seen positive buzz throughout its marketing period, feedback for Sonic has been negative. The trailer has almost 300,000 more dislikes than likes on YouTube. Reception for Sonic’s design has especially not been kind. Director Jeff Fowler says the team is going to redesign the character in response, which is surprising given that the film is releasing in six months.

In the trailer, there’s a sequence where Sonic is riding in a pickup truck alongside James Marsden’s character. The latter asks, “Okay pal, I want answers.” Sonic responds, “Basically, it looks like I’m going to have to save your planet.” What does that line of dialogue mean? It suggests that Sonic has come to Earth from a different world. It would be very odd for a character who lives on Earth to say, “your planet.”

In the past, Sonic was portrayed in some media as being from another world or alternate Earth, usually by the name of Planet Mobius. In the Western 90s’ cartoons, the setting was on Mobius. In Sonic the Comic, the setting was also on Mobius.

Earth seemingly appears in Sonic Adventure, and some sequels. Humans have a major role in titles such as Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). In Sonic Adventure, Sonic and friends walk around as everyday inhabitants, signifying that their kind is an accepted part of the planet. This could mean that the games always took place on Earth, while Mobius was mainly just used in spinoff media as an alternate Earth. The term “Mobius” hasn’t been used in recent years, with the assumption being that the Sonic stories are taking place on Earth.

To summarize, Planet Mobius is considered part of Sonic’s early history when he was adapted in Western media. However, Mobius is not mentioned in the core games, meaning that Sonic may have always lived on Earth, or at least an alternate version of Earth. Either way, it appears the Sonic film could be utilizing something like Mobius as a separate planet, or Earth from another dimension.
