The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

The horror genre is a mixed bag of goodies. Films such as Psycho and The Exorcist that have paved the way for others to exist and there are others fans wish to forget; either way, horror fans are incredibly forgiving and keep coming back for more. There are films that will forever be iconic and then there are more recent films that have gained popularity just the same. The last decade has churned out some amazing, quality-driven films that will go down in history for creativity, originality and terrifying scenes; but there are also some that have no substance, terrible acting and rushed storylines. It’s confusing how some horror movies can be so good on a budget, while others can fall flat entirely.

It’s tough to pick only 5 of the best horror films in the last decade because there have been many, but the plethora of terrible films was easier to weed out. Whatever the category, the horror genre has pushed the boundaries on topics such as grief, trauma, racism and just plane old fashioned jump scares.

10 Best: Cabin In The Woods (2011)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

When the trailer for Cabin in the Woods first came out, horror fans were probably rolling their eyes. Typical creepy cabin that houses college students with a knack for doing really stupid things is a tale as old as time, but this film was different. Cabin in the Woods mashes everything fans have come to know about horror movies, sprinkled some comedic relief and added some really good (and terrifying) monsters into the mix. The originality oozes out at every scene and has become an instant classic.

9 Worst: Parasitic (2012)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

The film Parasitic will forever go down as own of the worst rated films on IMDb. Why? Well, it’s outrageously cheesy and not in a good way. This one didn’t quite make the theaters, but it is considered one of the worst, nonetheless. A group of jerk friends are trapped in a nightclub with alien-like parasite creature. The acting and writing is terrible and the special effects were wasted on a bad film.

8 Best: The Babadook (2014)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

Sometimes horror films make their own sub-groups, based on the storyline presented. The Babadook is certainly about a creepy creature that lurks in the dark, but it’s much more than that. The audience got an inside look of how a single mother and her problem child son experience grief of an unexpected death.

Viewers get to see the spiral effect the woman goes down, with the terrifying Babadook in tow.

7 Worst: Slender Man (2018)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

There’s a good amount of horror movies out there that play on comedy, but then there’s movies that had no intent on being hilarious at all; Slender Man included. Based off of the popular Creepypasta story, it would seem like it would be a hit since the content was there, but everything from the acting to the cheesy scenes plants this movie straight in the bin of disappointing movies that could’ve been great.

6 Best: Get Out (2017)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

When Jordan Peele decided to write and direct Get Out, he set himself up for major success. Get Out is a film that stands on its own and creates a sub-genre because of its originality. This film is best explained as a menacing slow-burner that focuses on racism in the United States.

Although there are no mythical creatures hiding in the shadows, there definitely is an age-old shadow dweller present and that’s human-beings.

5 Worst: Don’t Go In The Woods (2010)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

Don’t Go in the Woods is based on a 1981 remake, but it’s confusing as to why it would be focused on, as the original wasn’t even good. The entire film seemed rushed, a cliched mess and an odd musical that wasn’t needed. It’s also a weird storyline, as a bunch of 20-somethings decide that in order to come up with some new and fresh songs for their band, they have to spend some time in the woods to do so.

4 Best: The Conjuring (2012)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

Horror master James Wan gave fans a wonderful treat when he came out with The Conjuring and it was much needed in 2012. Wan’s past work includes Saw and Insidious, so fans had an idea of how good it would turn out to be. The Conjuring was such a success, that spin-offs of other characters loosely based on the movie were churned out fairly quickly.

Alone, The Conjuring grossed close to $1 billion when it was in theaters and based on the basic haunting and possession storyline, it worked and it was extremely eery. Pair it with great acting and a secluded plantation and an instant classic was born.

3 Worst: Texas Chainsaw 3D

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

It’s a bummer when an iconic favorite is taken and completely stomped on because of bad acting and cheesy set-ups. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been re-made and re-mastered quite a few times and it was a success in 2003, but not when it came to this one.

The storyline was stretched thin and the beautiful cast couldn’t hack it. Hopefully fans will remember this franchise for what it once was and forget about what it is now.

2 Best: The Witch (2015)

The 5 Best Horror Movies From The Last Decade & The 5 Worst

The Witch hits the spot when a down-on-their-luck family is banished from their village, after a child goes missing. This film touches on religion, the devil in disguise and slow-burning scenes that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. It’s a great addition to the new age of horror film, because it takes its time to get to the root of the film and it’s drawn out enough to keep viewers interested.

There’s something about horror movies that are placed in a different era that makes them extremely creepy.

1 Worst: Cabin Fever (2016)

When the 2002 film, Cabin Fever hit the theaters, horror fans were delightfully surprised at how creepy and funny can be all at once. What’s even worse about this impossibly bad re-make, is that it took scenes from the original, shot-for-shot and still turned out as a hot mess. The re-make had everything going for it: a bigger set, a bigger budget and even better camera shots, but it just didn’t cut it and turned out to be one of the worst horror films out there.
