Mad Men gets a lot of love for a number of reasons. Of course, the thing that helped elevate the show to international fame was its impeccable production design. The show brings the 1960s to life with gorgeous costumes, imaginative set design, and wonderful hair styling. The show has also earned consistent acclaim for its thematic depth, writing, directing, and visual style.
But a television show is nothing without its characters. Mad Men has a slew of great characters, all of whom are written and portrayed to perfection. It’s hard to pick favorites, but it has to be done.
10 Sally Draper
As Redditor LazyTurtle999 writes, “Child and teen characters can often be cringe-worthy on TV but the actress that played Sally did a wonderful job and the writers always gave her good treatment. She had a lot of depth. Sally was great.”
Some of Sally’s best scenes concerned her love for Don (and hatred for Betty), and Kiernan Shipka did a wonderful job portraying the complex child. Sally would grow up to be a relatively broken woman, and her tragic story makes for compelling television.
9 Pete Campbell

Joan is easily one of the most complex characters on the show and easily the strongest female in the office. She’s wickedly intelligent, and she knows how to run the office from behind the scenes (often letting the males take all the credit).
7 Meredith
Mad Men has a reputation as a serious period drama, but it is not without its comedy. As this deleted Reddit user writes, “Not my favorite, but funniest is Meredith. By the last season every word that came out of her mouth was comedy gold.”
Meredith largely functioned as the comic relief, especially in the last season when things were coming to a dramatic head with the decline of SCDP. Her comedic lines were great, and they were delivered with hilarious timing and tone by actress Stephanie Drake.
6 Betty Draper

1 Michael Ginsberg
Ginsberg was a great late addition to Mad Men, not appearing until the fifth season. But his subplot – specifically his season seven subplot – is easily one of the show’s most creative and shocking.
