Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

One of Soul Eater’s strongest suits by far (nd it really doesn’t falter in any department as the years go by, aside from perhaps some of its humor) has to be its characters. Their designs are eye-catching and memorable, fitting each character’s personality perfectly. Even characters who appear to be perfect on the outside are filled to the brim with their own conflicts and insecurities to stop them from becoming unrealistically perfect, as is the case with the titular heroine Maka.

At first, she seems like a highly intelligent honor student who’s sharp-witted and capable in battle. While these are true, she’s also surprisingly prone to letting her feelings get the best of her in important moments, which leads to problems that she otherwise could have avoided. She also has a tendency to not be the most rational and clear-headed thinker at times despite her intelligence, especially when it comes to her relationships with others. All in all, this leads to her being a very balanced character who’s done about as much good as she has bad.

10 Right: She Tried To Help Soul Socialize More At The Dance

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

Although Maka seems like she’d be the more introverted one out of her and her partner, when at their school’s party, she’s actually shown to be the opposite. She’s cheerful and talkative, drawing even Soul to ask about why she was acting so weird, to which she responded that they should try to be more sociable since it’s what one does at a party.

When he doesn’t seem to want to do so, she shows an impressive ability to read his emotions as she brings raw fish- something she hates, but his favorite- for him from the buffet.

9 Wrong: Refused To Admit She’s The Weak Link During A Group Training Session

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

Maka is an incredibly bright student who can pick up just about anything she sets her mind to with enough determination. However, she also tends to think too highly of herself, and this is a very obvious fault of hers that gets her into trouble more often than it helps her.

While trying to resonate souls with fellow meisters Black Star and Death the Kid, Maka continuously shoves the fault for their failure onto them instead of seeing it as a group effort that included her. She eventually does apologize and work past this, but it could’ve been done initially where she instead chose to storm off.

8 Right: Helped Crona Stand Up To Their Abusive Mother And Take Back Their Life (In The Anime)

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

Before meeting Maka, Crona’s fate was ultimately already decided for them- and it was a rather cruel, lonely path as well. They were created to be a living weapon of sorts for their mother’s wicked ends and nothing more, and this was something that the ever-righteous Maka was rightly unable to stand for.

Although Maka had to disobey orders from a teacher in order to fight and ultimately get through to Crona, it was well worth it in the end. Without her help, Crona may not have ever had a true friend in their life.

7 Wrong: Runs Off To Chase A Witch By Herself Instead Of Telling Her Partner

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

During their first run-in with Crona, a freeze-up on Maka’s part causes her weapon partner to sustain a severe injury. While he recovers fine, Maka’s mental wounds are far more severe, and she has trouble coping with the fact that she let him get injured.

This is understandable, but what isn’t is the way she chooses to handle it. After sensing a soul that’s far too powerful for her to fight, her immediate response is to chase after it alone without saying anything to anyone, which could have been incredibly dangerous.

6 Right: Uses Her Past Experiences To Make Her Stronger, Rather Than As An Excuse

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

It’s no secret that Maka hasn’t had wonderful male role models within her life. Throughout her childhood, she watched as her father repeatedly cheated on her mother, and made promises to the both of them that he repeatedly broke. It took everything she had to be able to trust Soul and have a male partner- even in a non-romantic sense- after everything she’d seen.

She instead chooses to use her father’s betrayal as a driving force that motivates her to create a weapon even stronger than him, rather than make poor choices and blame how he raised her.

5 Wrong: She Jumps To Unfair Conclusions Because Of Her Past

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

Just because Maka doesn’t let her past hold her back doesn’t mean that she lacks any imperfections because of it. As early as the first episode, she can be seen accusing Soul when he didn’t do anything wrong.

He leaped into Blair the Witch’s house without thinking, and accidentally crashed into her while she was taking a bath. Maka lost it after this, swearing that he must’ve known about what Blair was doing, even though there was no way he could’ve seen before he sent his foot flying through the building’s second-story window. This isn’t the only time that she makes these irrational, hasty accusations either.

4 Right: Instead Of Letting Her Fear Weigh Her Down, She Uses It To Make Herself Stronger

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

During an encounter with Medusa, Maka was instructed along with Black Star and Kid to run past Medusa, and Stein would keep her from chasing after them. However, while they were running past, there was a very real threat on their lives because of Medusa’s vector arrow magic.

Maka was terrified, and rightly so, and the fear began to weigh down her boots and would have caused her to falter. However, she’s able to instead fight through her fear and make herself stronger as a result, and this isn’t the only time she’s shown to be able to do so.

3 Wrong: She Shouldn’t Have Entered The Church And Met Crona Without Backup

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

Early on in the series, before Maka enters the church and meets Crona, she gets the sense of overwhelming danger coming from inside. She describes it as a crushing and powerful force, as if it was taking a toll on her by just feeling it.

Despite this, she still decides to enter the church and confront Crona alone rather than calling Lord Death and requesting backup. It can be done from the window of any building, so it wasn’t like they weren’t able to, but in her moment of panic she charged in without considering how much danger her and Soul were really in.

2 Right: Cares About Academics And Takes Getting Top Marks Seriously

Soul Eater 5 Times Maka Albarn Was Right (& 5 She Was Wrong)

When characters are young, it’s easy for them to care about practically anything and everything else besides academics. Especially in action shows where schools also serve as places to train students’ fighting abilities, it’s not uncommon to find main characters who don’t excel at- or even don’t care for- academics entirely.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to Maka. She takes her studies incredibly seriously, to the point where she considers studying one of her hobbies and she pushes herself for days to ready herself for a school-wide exam with publicized rankings.

1 Wrong: Blames Soul For Blair’s Advances Towards Him, Instead Of Discussing It With Her

Throughout the series, Blair consistently flirts with Soul and tries to hit on him. It’s played mostly for comedic purposes, and Soul always rejects her advances, but this still doesn’t stop Maka from having over-the-top reactions that feel more malicious than comedic at times.

For example, Blair goes to wake Soul up one morning before school, landing him in a rather compromising position. When Maka walks in to wake him as usual, instead of giving him any time to explain- as she should have known he wouldn’t have initiated such a thing- she sends him flying out of their apartment window. And while it’s true that women being violently over-the-top for comedic value is a trope in anime, it isn’t one that lands well and doesn’t look good on Maka’s part.
