Over the course of South Park’s long history, Randy Marsh (Trey Parker) has attempted several different occupations. A geologist by trade, Randy became famous for winning a Nobel Prize for his theory on spontaneous combustion. However, the character is often depicted as a bumbling fool who fails to put his scientific acumen to good use.

It has helped make him great comic relief though. As such, Randy has been forced to essay a series of jobs that he has no official training or expertise in. Some are far more outlandish than others, but all of them are odd for an esteemed Ph.D. holder.

10 Mall Cop

During the “Black Friday” episode of Season 17, Randy took a strategic position as a South Park Mall security guard. While the position itself isn’t so strange, his reasoning behind taking the job is pretty strange.

While he claims he took the job to earn extra holiday cash, Randy reveals his true intention of beating the crowded Black Friday lines and gain access to merchandise before it sells out. Randy is appointed to chief of security after his predecessor is killed by an aggressive parent.

When everyone tells Randy that renting videos is passe, he becomes relieved when the building is torched to the ground by Shelly. After the fire, the insurance compensates Randy for a portion of his initial investment. Randy then goes back to being a geologist.

Enamored by a Food Network program, Randy fancies himself as the South Park Elementary school chef in “Creme Fraiche,” the 14th episode of Season 14.

In addition to stepping into the departed shoes of the iconic Chef (Isaac Hayes), Randy’s odd occupational choice is made stranger when he creates his own show called “Cafeteria Fraiche.” When the show draws the attention of Food Network stars, a cook-off challenge ensues in a way that proves Randy was cooking out of sheer vanity rather than the need to feed children.

7 Boy Band Member

In the first of a series of performative occupations, Randy once revealed he was a member of a pop boy band called The Ghetto Avenue Boys. According to Randy in the Season 4 episode, “Something You Can Do With Your Finger,” the band made millions off a hit single entitled “You Got It.”

One year after their smash hit record, the group was disbanded for being too old for a boy band. Randy was 19 at the time.

While sharing a bowling alley stage with Steamy Nicks, Randy can’t help but incorporate his chronic flatulence into his performance.

5 Broadway Performer

Later in Season 15 (episode 11), Randy continues to pursue his musical talents by writing, producing, and directing a Broadway musical with an unrepeatably profane title.

The foul nature of Randy’s show draws the ire of the Broadway Bros, which consists of Elton John, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Stephen Schwartz. After smoothing things over with his esteemed colleagues, Randy agrees to retitle the play The Woman in White, although it’s unclear whether or not the show was completed.

Not to be consumed with a British nobleman, Randy doubled as pop star Lorde in the Season 18 episodes “Gluten Free Ebola” and “The Cissy.”

After performing as Lorde during the final party in the former episode, Randy admits to leading a secret existence as Lorde’s body-double in the latter. Randy claims to have written such hits for the star as “Hunger Games” and “Push” while stashing his earnings for his work in the walls of his residence.

One of the weirdest jobs Randy ever had was serving as the coach for a team sport he invented. In response to South Park’s football rule that bans kickoffs, Randy creates a game called Sarcastaball.

Instead of tackling opponents, Sarcastaball encourages the boys to be nice to the opposition. Footballs are replaced with balloons, while helmets and shoulder pads are swapped for tinfoil caps and bras. When Sarcastaball is adopted by the NFL, Randy becomes the official head coach of the Denver Broncos.

1 Obscene Magician

In the eighth episode of Season 18, Randy takes on his weirdest job of all-time as a magician who specializes in using his genitalia to perform a series of parlor tricks.

Despite the wildly inappropriate nature of his lewd magic act, Randy insists on performing it in such places as a kindergarten class, as well as a Panda Express restaurant. Both instances turn out to be a disaster, leading to Randy’s return as an inept geologist.
