South Parks 10 Darkest Episodes Ranked

Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s groundbreaking satirical animated series South Park quickly made a name for itself when it hit the airwaves in the late ‘90s for its twisted sense of humor. Considering it revolves around a bunch of pre-teen kids, South Park is one of the darkest shows on TV, with some truly shocking comedy.

From school shootings to crack babies to child molestation to Devil-worshipping woodland Christmas critters, South Park has tackled some really dark subject matter over the course of its 23 seasons and counting. There are plenty of dark South Park episodes to enjoy, and these ones are the darkest.

10 Dead Kids

In the season 22 premiere “Dead Kids,” South Park tackled one of the worst tragedies facing America: school shootings. In the episode, shootings have become so common at South Park Elementary that parents don’t even blink twice when their kids narrowly avoid death at school.

Butters is assigned the position of hall monitor and he’s armed with an assault rifle to protect the school’s hallways. The frequency of school shootings at South Park Elementary became a running gag throughout the rest of the season.

With the help of some activists, they manage to get the whale to Mexico, where it’s attached to a rocket and sent to the Moon, where it lies dead over the credits.

8 Crack Baby Athletic Association

Kyle discovers that Cartman, Butters, and a few of the other guys are exploiting crack-addicted babies for a sports franchise in season 15’s “Crack Baby Athletic Association.”

In a spot-on satire of the NCAA’s treatment of its student-athletes, Cartman travels to the University of Colorado under the guise of a Southern plantation owner and asks the athletic department how they get away with not paying their “slaves.”

7 Cartman Sucks

When Cartman puts Butters’ penis in his mouth as a prank in “Cartman Sucks” without realizing it reflects worse on him than Butters, Kyle convinces him that the only way to “cancel out the gay polarity” is to get Butters to put Cartman’s penis in his mouth.

Butters’ dad walks in on it and sends his son to a Christian conversion therapy camp where the counsellors repeatedly tell boys with homosexual urges that they’re just “confused.”

6 The Return Of Chef

Between the ninth and tenth seasons of South Park, Isaac Hayes departed from the show, having been offended by the episode “Trapped in the Closet,” which mocked his religion, Scientology.

In the season 10 premiere “The Return of Chef,” Parker and Stone used audio from Hayes’ previous recording sessions to piece together a storyline about Chef being brainwashed by a cult that travels around the world, molesting children.

5 Butters’ Very Own Episode

After Kenny was indefinitely killed off in the penultimate episode of South Park’s fifth season, the finale was dedicated to Butters to expand his character ahead of joining the main cast in season 6. “Butters’ Very Own Episode” starts off innocently enough, with Butters’ mom sending him to spy on his dad as he buys her anniversary present.

But it quickly takes a dark turn as Butters follows his dad to a porno theater and a bathhouse, and then his mom tries to drown him in a river.

4 The China Probrem

South Parks 10 Darkest Episodes Ranked

Cartman becomes paranoid of a Chinese invasion in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics in “The China Probrem” and recruits Butters to help him take over P.F. Chang’s in an attempt to figure out the invasion plan. This A-plot is hardly inoffensive, but it’s nothing compared to the B-plot.

In the B-plot, the other boys try to get George Lucas and Steven Spielberg arrested for “assaulting” Indiana Jones with the alien plot of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This storyline is intercut with some really disturbing scenes in which Lucas and Spielberg assault their beloved creation.

3 Stanley’s Cup

South Parks 10 Darkest Episodes Ranked

When his bike is impounded, Stan is required to coach a pee-wee hockey team in the season 10 finale “Stanley’s Cup.” The episode follows the traditional structure of a sports movie as a team of underdogs trains for the championship. There’s even a kid with cancer in the hospital rooting for them.

However, the episode actually culminates in a happy ending for the other team. When the other pee-wee team doesn’t show up, Stan’s team gets annihilated by an actual NHL team with adult players, who then celebrate to Queen’s “We Are the Champions” as the kid in the hospital dies.

2 Scott Tenorman Must Die

Season 5’s “Scott Tenorman Must Die” was a turning point for Cartman. After being initially conceived as an eight-year-old Archie Bunker, Cartman became the embodiment of pure evil in “Scott Tenorman Must Die.”

The titular ninth-grader tricks Cartman into buying some of his pubes, prompting Cartman to seek revenge by cooking Scott’s parents into a pot of chilli and feeding them to him.

1 Woodland Critter Christmas

Cartman reads his holiday-themed story to the class in “Woodland Critter Christmas.” At first, it’s a festive, heartwarming tale in which Stan encounters some animals in the woods who ask for his help.

However, as the story goes on, it becomes apparent that the animals are sadistic Satanists who want to bring forth the Antichrist and usher in the apocalypse.
