At the beginning of the second season of Gilmore Girls, Lorelai and Rory’s love lives seemed perfect. Rory had gotten back together with Dean after she was able to say that she loved him, and Max had proposed to Lorelai with a thousand yellow daises.

One of the most tragic parts of the show’s second season was when Lorelai decided not to marry Max. This decision led Lorelai and Rory on a road trip in “The Road Trip To Harvard.” Fans love this episode as both mother and daughter started thinking more seriously about their futures, and it was fun to see them doing something out of the ordinary. There are many scenes from that episode that are very memorable.

10 Rory Said They Didn’t Know Where They Were Going

While Rory acted like her mom in many ways, she was definitely more cautious and studious than Lorelai. The episode opened with the Gilmore girls in the car and Rory saying that they had no idea where they were going.

Lorelai said, “The point of this is to be spontaneous. To drive and land someplace we’ve never been and never expected to be.” Rory didn’t love that answer, as she would have preferred to know exactly what was going on, but she went along with it since she wanted to support her mom during this difficult time.

9 Lorelai Called Sookie, Who Had Finished The Wedding Cake

Many episodes showed Lorelai and Sookie’s friendship and at the beginning of “The Road Trip To Harvard,” Lorelai called Sookie to tell her she had called her wedding off. Lorelai said, “but you should know we all still love Max, and to figure out exactly what happened, you’d have to dig up Freud himself and have him work on me full time,” proving that she wasn’t ready to say more at this time.

This was a sad and also funny scene, as Lorelai said she hoped Sookie hadn’t gotten too far into making the wedding cake. Sookie lied and said it was fine, but she had already baked a cake with many tiers. Sookie was always a wonderful friend and she proved that here, too.

8 Rory And Lorelai At The Chesire Cat Inn

Every Gilmore Girls fan remembers the quirky inn that Lorelai and Rory stayed at in this episode. Lorelai knew of an inn but when they tried to check in, she learned that there was a new owner who had made some big changes.

LaDonn, the owner, kept saying that they should ring the bell because guests love doing that, which sums up this offbeat place. Lorelai and Rory wanted to leave immediately, but they figured they needed a place to stay so they checked in. This was a great moment as everyone has experienced random, hilarious times on vacation.

7 They Avoided The Guests Downstairs And Missed Dinner

Lorelai and Rory never wanted to make small talk with strangers, so this inn was definitely the wrong choice for them. Immediately, they met some very nosy guests who asked way too many questions. The mother and daughter escaped to their room, which meant that they missed dinner.

As they were lying in bed trying not to think about how hungry they were, Rory told Lorelai that she was sure she had made a mistake. She said Lorelai was in love with Max and ran away because she was afraid. This was a memorable moment as they had a fight, and Lorelai was passive aggressive with her daughter, not wanting to discuss it. This was a shame, as Rory deserved to know the truth since this affected her, too.

6 Sookie Told Luke The Wedding Was Called Off And He Was Thrilled

While dining at Luke’s, Sookie told him that Lorelai had decided not to get married.

Luke had been in his typical grumpy mood and Kirk was annoying him, but as soon as he heard this news, he perked up and his surly tone was gone. He gave Kirk free coffee and was absolutely thrilled. This was an adorable moment that proved that Luke was in love with Lorelai. He tried to be supportive of her relationship, but of course he didn’t want her to marry anyone else.

5 Lorelai And Rory Visited Harvard And Rory Sat In On A Class

Lorelai and Rory realized that they were close to Harvard and they visited the campus. Lorelai said, “We are beholding your future” and when Rory said “It’s big,” Lorelai replied, “You have a big future.”

Rory sat in on a class and even answered one of the prof’s questions, impressing him and herself. She grinned and left as quickly as she had entered the room, giddy with the promise of her future. It was so sweet seeing Rory so close to the place she had always dreamed of, and even though fans know that she decided to go to Yale instead, it was still a reminder of what she was striving for.

4 Lorelai Got Emotional, Thinking About Missing Out On College

Fans can always relate to Lorelai’s witty quotes but even though she often poked fun at situations, she could be deep, too.

In this episode, Lorelai became emotional as she watched Rory thrive on their visit to Harvard. She looked around at all of the students with their lives ahead of them and realized that she had never really processed what she had missed out on. While of course she loved her life in Stars Hollow and wouldn’t trade Rory for anything, she acknowledged that she didn’t get to have a normal young adult life or that traditional college experience.

3 They Came Home And Lorelai Saw The Chuppah

Even though he was in love with Lorelai, Luke made her a chuppah for her wedding to Max.

When she got home, she saw it there, a horrible reminder of what she had lost. Lorelai teared up looking at it, thinking about what a good guy Max was and how close she had come to having a happy married life. It made sense for the show to break off Max and Lorelai’s engagement as Luke and Lorelai were always the endgame of the series, but this was still a tough moment.

2 Emily Thought Lorelai And Max Eloped

Although Emily knew a lot about etiquette and being polite, she could still put her foot in her mouth sometimes. When Rory and Lorelai returned from their road trip, they went to Friday night dinner, and Lorelai said she had to tell her mom something about Max.

Emily immediately thought that they had eloped and started complaining about how she was out of the loop yet again. She made it all about her, talking about dresses and gifts, and Lorelai finally said that they had split up. Emily didn’t really react to that, as she wanted to change the subject right away. This was a memorable scene as it drove home that Lorelai and Emily still had a long way to go.

1 Lorelai Told Luke It Was Time To Open The Inn

Lorelai and Sookie opened their Dragonfly Inn and it was at the end of the season two episode “The Road Trip To Harvard” that they put the plan into motion.

While talking to Luke, Lorelai talked about how much she loved visiting Harvard with Rory. She said, “It was amazing. Seeing Rory there, in a dorm room, in a classroom. She fit.” Then Lorelai told Luke that it was time for her and Sookie to open their own inn. This was a huge moment in her life, and it seemed like seeing Rory so inspired lit a fire inside of her. There would be some problems along the way, naturally, but fans know that Lorelai did make this dream come to fruition.
