Director Ron Howard, who has taken on the role of directing the untitled Han Solo spinoff movie, has officially commented on finishing the project. In a shocking move made by Lucasfilm, Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired after clashing with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan over creative differences with only three weeks left before wrapping the film.

While there has been many differing opinions amongst the Star Wars faithful on whether or not a young Han Solo installment was a good idea in the first place, the firing of Lord and Miller seemingly confirmed that there were serious problems and tensions during the film’s production, which started principle photography back in February. While the duo are known for creating successful animated and comedy films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and 21 Jump Street, it turned out that a comedy set in the Star Wars universe was not what Lucasfilm was looking for. Instead, the powers that be wanted a more grounded space opera with comedic bits, similar to how the original trilogy was composed of action, adventure and drama with a hint of comedy that kept audiences smiling while on the edge of their seats.

It was confirmed this morning that Howard, director of films like Apollo 13 and The Da Vinci Code, would be picking up where Lord and Miller left off as the new director for the Han Solo film. Now, Howard has offered an official statement on Twitter about his new role. Here is what Howard posted:

I hope to honor the great work already done & help deliver on the promise of a Han Solo film.

Now that Howard has been roped into the Star Wars world, it’s going to be exciting (and somewhat nerve-racking) to see how he’s going to patch together what comedic bits Lord and Miller have done so far with his own dramatic style, making it the Han Solo film that Lucasfilm wanted.

A of now, the film is still set for a May 25, 2018 release date with Alden Ehrenreich taking on the role as the young Han Solo, Woody Harrelson as his mentor, Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. The cast also brings Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Westworld star Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michael K. Williams and Ian Kenny. With a talented cast and Howard now at the helm for, fans can only hope that the Han Solo film will be an exciting addition to the Star Wars universe and make it through this crazy shake-up.
