Spellbreak Has CrossProgression Across All Platforms On Day One

Proletariat’s Spellbreak has cross-progression across all platforms on day one. The epic fantasy action spellcasting game sees players take on the role of a battlemage in a battle royale experience. Like Destiny 2, players can choose between classes, using various items and skills to overcome their opponents alone or with friends. Unlike other battle royale titles, players rely more on their class skills and abilities as opposed to a meta weapon that gives users an inherent edge over the competition.

The battle royale genre continues to increase its presence in the gaming industry, gaining momentum with innovative titles such as Fortnite and PUBG and expanding to more established franchises. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII was one of the first well-established series to be inspired by Fortnite and PUBG and implement a battle royale mode. Despite the genre’s recent fame, however, the beginnings of its rise can be traced back to roughly 2012 with mods for other titles, such as the DayZ mod for ARMA 2.

Taking another page out of Destiny 2’s playbook, Spellbreak has cross-progression across all platforms, but it’s implementing the feature from day one. Proletariat – the game’s independent developer and publisher – released information confirming the feature for the game’s launch on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players who create a Spellbreak account will be able to access their game on any of its supported platforms and maintain their progression, stats, and customizations. Cross-platform squads will also be available.

Proletariat’s CEO – Seth Sivak – had this to say about Spellbreak and the cross-platform feature: “Introducing cross-progression means you can play Spellbreak however you want, with whomever you want, and always ensure your progress in-game follows you to whatever platform you’re playing on. If you’ve leveled up to Master Toxicologist on your PlayStation 4, all of the time you have invested is still with you if you log-in to your game on PC, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.”

Spellbreak seems like a title that will bring a refreshing vibrancy to the battle royale genre. Some of the spells, such as crackling lightning, look like something out of Star Wars, shooting out of characters’ fingertips or pulsing out from their palms. The stark colors and artwork appear to be inspired by both anime and cartoons from the west. Its fast-paced action, featuring a full drop-in experience similar to PUBG, with hurling boulders and meteors, dodge mechanics, and explosive combat should provide an exhilarating experience for battle royale enthusiasts who crave a graphics style akin to Breath of the Wild.

Independent studios such as Proletariat don’t often have the financial backing to create wildly successful titles, but Spellbreak appears to be a departure from the norm in that regard. If it capitalizes on the battle royale genre properly, it should make Proletariat much more well-known, opening the door for future success. However, massive success often sees independent studios becoming bought out by publishers, giving those studios more financial backing but also putting them at the mercy of their new parent company in terms of development. While this isn’t always a bad omen, it does make fans wary, especially after the vast amounts of controversy surrounding companies like EA and Activision.
