While Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man is a big hit among fans today, there came a time where Tobey Maguire was the inspiration for many instead. With Sam Raimi at the helm, the three movies featuring the iconic superhero were big successes between 2002 and 2007 – arguably setting the benchmark for blockbusters of its kind today.
With the MCU yet to complete a Peter Parker trilogy, and The Amazing Spider-Man series getting canceled after just two movies, we’re now going to take a look back at Raimi’s installments. Here are 10 money facts about the three films.
10 $4,000,000
Part of what makes Tom Holland so special as Peter Parker today is that he can legitimately pass for being a high school kid – despite actually being 24 years of age. However, not everybody was pleased when Peter Parker landed the role of the webslinger back in 2002, with the actor 26 – and looking it – at the time.
Yet, upon landing the gig, Maguire was paid $4million. Given how the movie was a big box office hit the actor’s earnings only went up and reports have suggested he pocketed $26m in total from the trilogy. He was nearly forced out of the role early due to a back injury but, luckily for him, he was able to recover.

2002 was a rather epic year for movies. And Spider-Man led the way when it came to the box office, taking home a huge $821,708,551 worldwide. Superhero movies weren’t guaranteed successes at the time, which makes the achievement that bit more impressive.
In fact, only two movies took home more that year. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers spearheaded the list with an eyewatering $936,689,735 worldwide while Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets earned $987,979,634. Spider-Man did top of the domestic list, however, grossing $403,706,375 from a total of 3,876 theatres.

Kirsten Dunst was somewhat known to fans before taking on the role of Mary Jane Watson, having previously appeared in the 1995 hit Jumanji. And, like Tobey Maguire, she also made plenty of cash from Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
Dunst was paid close to $3m for the first movie and, afterwards, things only went up. Reports have claimed she took over $20m from the three movies in total and it certainly helped make her career the success it is today. Dunst has taken a break in recent years but is set return to the scene when The Power of the Dog comes out in 2021.

We’ve already mentioned above how 2002 was a cracking year when it came to box office blockbusters. But Spider-Man made history that year, taking the record for the biggest opening day ever with $39.4million earned in just 24 hours.
Obviously, what with inflation and the price of your movie ticket rising, the numbers have gone up and up in the years since. Now, Avengers: Endgame holds the record for the most money made in one day. Given how that’s the biggest box office movie in history, that’s not necessarily unsurprising.

When you look at the other figures on this list, $100 definitely doesn’t seem alot in the grand scheme of things. But that’s the amount actor Joe Manganiello, who played Flash Thompson, claimed to have been offered by two cast members to actually punch Tobey Maguire during their fight scene in their High School corridor.
“There was a crew guy who came up to me and said, ‘Listen, I’ll give you a hundred dollars if you hit him in the face by accident,'” he said on the Pete Holmes Show. When asked whether he contemplated it, he added: “I probably never would have worked again.”

With Spider-Man being a big success in 2002, everybody knew Sony was onto a winner when they released Spider-Man 2 two years later. And, sensing this opportunity, Tobey Maguire’s agent requested that he earn either $25m from the blockbuster – or 10 per cent of the gross.
This was denied but that didn’t seem to impact Maguire, who gave arguably his strongest performance in the first sequel of the trilogy. Spider-Man 2 is commonly-regarded as one of the best superhero movies ever made, even in this day and age where the MCU and DCEU pump out movies with increasing regularity.

With the first movie of the trilogy going down well with fans and critics alike, the excitement was always going to be high for Spider-Man 2. And while most big films release on a Friday, it instead hit theatres on a Wednesday instead – on June 30 to be precise.
Impressively, it broke a record that day. The title broke a record for highest one-day opening on a Wednesday by making a huge $40,442,604 worldwide. In the end it came second on the list of domestic box office earnings for that year, with only Shrek 2 making more money after being shown in 4,223 theatres in the United States.
3 $350,000,000
Publicly, it was claimed that Spider-Man 3 cost around $250million to make. However, it’s since been claimed that it instead cost Sony closer to $350m instead. And, even for Hollywood, that’s lot. The most expensive movie made – until Avengers: Endgame came out in 2019.
This was apparently due to the use of expensive technology, with CGI evolving rapidly at the time. Additionally, it supposedly cost Sony $1m a day to shoot in New York, while reshoots that spanned close to eight months also hit the budget hard. What’s perhaps most infuriating is that the movie, among fans, is deemed the weakest of the trilogy.
2 $20,000,000
The first IMAX movie came out in 1971, entitled Tiger Child. In the years afterward many movies also released on the software – but Spider-Man 3 enjoyed arguably the best success of the entire lot.
The 2007 hit’s screenings reached $20m in 30 days – faster than any other 2D film remastered in the format. It seems like all fans were eager to see what Sony’s emphatic budget was capable of and the answer was this: terrific special effects but a muddled plot.
1 $894,983,373
The ending of Spider-Man 2 definitely left fans of the franchise wanting more. There was the promise of new villains, the love storyline with Mary Jame Watson to let play out and the relationship with close friend Harry Osborn to resolve.
This resulted in it being the best-grossing movie of the entire trilogy, taking home $894,983,373 worldwide in total. Only one Spider-Man movie has made more money and that’s 2019’s Far From Home. An impressive achievement but, ultimately, Spider-Man 3’s muddled story and questionable decisions stopped Sam Raimi’s trilogy from ever getting another installment.
