SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

The MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man 3 can answer some lingering questions from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield eras. A brief panic erupted in the summer of 2019, when all the world had to worry about was Tom Holland’s Spider-Man being removed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Sony and Disney failed to strike a deal. While the news might’ve caused concern for Spidey fans (and Holland himself), the ordeal is slowly proving to be a blessing in disguise. Terms were ultimately reached between the two parties, and since then, the superhero movies of Sony and Marvel Studios have slowly gravitated closer.

The first major crossover clue came in the trailer for Sony’s Morbius, which featured a surprise appearance from Michael Keaton’s Vulture, introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Even as 2020 draws to a close, it’s still not entirely clear what the cameo means. A Sinister Sony Six? A multiverse crossover between worlds? Morbius set in the MCU? But the universe-hopping madness doesn’t end with Keaton. According to widespread reports, the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 will feature both the Maguire and Garfield versions of Peter Parker, as well as Kirsten Dunst’s MJ, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil. At this rate, it’ll be more surprising if Peter Porker doesn’t make his live-action debut in 2021.

By turning Spider-Man 3 into a multiverse mashup of the web-slinger’s greatest hits, the MCU will continue the stories of Maguire and Garfield’s Peter Parkers, providing an opportunity to address some unanswered questions from those franchises.

Do Peter & MJ Live Happily Ever After?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

Although Sam Raimi planned to make another Spider-Man movie after his maligned third effort, the trilogy as it stands does a good job of wrapping up every major storyline and plot thread, with the exception of one – did Peter’s landlord ever fix the damn door?

The other important unresolved question concerns the fate of Peter and MJ. From upside-down kissing in the rain to dancing with another woman in public, Peter and MJ’s romance endures its share of ups and downs, especially after Peter falls under the influence of the Venom symbiote. Spider-Man 3’s ending hints at a reconciliation between the two, but their future is left ambiguous. Maguire’s appearance in the MCU can reveal whether Peter and MJ got their happy ending, or whether their relationship followed the example of Peter B. Parker from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and fizzled out as middle-age loomed. Raimi fans will be hoping for the former.

Was The Venom Symbiote Finished Off For Good?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

It’s safe to say that Venom was not a success in Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi was pushed to include the villain, and everyone involved now agrees the portrayal was a poor one. Nevertheless, the fate of the symbiote remains somewhat open-ended. In Spider-Man 3’s climactic battle, Peter tosses one of Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs into the black goop, apparently burning both Venom and Eddie Brock completely. Of course, comic fans will know that symbiotes aren’t quite so easy to get rid of, and Maguire’s Peter probably heard more from Venom, Carnage, Toxin and the rest in later years. Peter also left a sample of the symbioate with a certain Curt Connors, so Venom is still very much on the board in Raimi’s universe.

Maguire’s Spidey could make an off-hand comment about symbiote trouble in the MCU, confirming his later battles with Venom. Alternatively, there might be some Tom Hardy involvement in the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Verse collision. With the Sony and Marvel movies now essentially of one world, Maguire’s Peter Parker exists in the same cinematic realm as Hardy’s Eddie Brock, who is set to return in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. In a meeting between the two, Maguire could reveal whether he ever faced Venom again after Spider-Man 3.

Did Curt Connors Go Lizard?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

Dylan Baker appears in both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 as Dr. Curt Connors, but never does he become Lizard in the Sam Raimi trilogy. Baker has previously joked about his elongated origin story, and Connors looked set to become a major villain in Spider-Man 4 and beyond, but the end of Raimi’s tenure put paid to those designs. Appearing in the MCU, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker can address the future of Dr. Connors. Perhaps Curt transformed during the intervening years, or maybe he hasn’t yet made the transition and Andrew Garfield’s Peter can warn his alternate self. Connors might’ve even taken a different path altogether thanks to the Venom sample left in his possession. Curt Connors was arguably the biggest casualty of Raimi departing Spider-Man, and the MCU can provide a slither of justice for the character.

The Doctor Strange Tease

The scene is clearly played for laughs, but when a Daily Bugle journalist begins suggesting catchy villain names for the newly-turned Otto Octavius, “Doctor Strange” is mooted as a contender. J. Jonah Jameson likes the idea, but says it’s already taken, confirming the existence of the Sorcerer Supreme in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe. Since Tom Holland’s Peter Parker also knows a guy called Doctor Strange (to use his “superhero name”), there’s an opportunity to reveal more about Strange’s counterpart in the Sony world.

Benedict Cumberbatch will reportedly also appear in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3. Maybe Strange momentarily crosses universes, which would explain how Jameson knows the character’s moniker, while also accounting for Strange’s refusal to help Spidey protect New York throughout an entire 3 films.

What Happened To Oscorp In Both Worlds?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

In both Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man world and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies, the legacy of the Osborn family goes unaddressed. After discovering Peter’s secret, James Franco’s Harry Osborn goes to war with Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3, taking up his father’s mantle as the Green Goblin and attempting to kill his former friend. Harry eventually learns the truth thanks to a conveniently-placed butler, and forgives Peter, sacrificing himself to save Spidey during the final fight against Venom. While Harry’s story comes to a tragic end, his father’s company remains a treasure trove of dangerous arachnids, Green Goblin technology, and cutting-edge science. Who took over Oscorp after Harry’s death? Did a Tony Stark or Reed Richards swoop in to buy the company, or did all the dangerous experiments inside Oscorp HQ fall onto the streets of New York?

Oscorp also remains a mystery in the world of The Amazing Spider-Man, albeit for an entirely different reason. The Andrew Garfield era revealed Norman Osborn was dying, and had started using his science empire to find a miracle cure. While Harry becomes Green Goblin and ends the franchise incarcerated (more on that later), his father appears to die in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but a scrapped post-credits scene would’ve revealed his survival, and Webb planned to revisit Norman in subsequent films as a major villain. Since Tom Holland has yet to encounter the Osborn clan in the MCU, both Maguire and Garfield could offer their insight. This conversation would allow Garfield’s Peter Parker to reveal whether Norman Osborn (or his head, at least) was ever heard from again.

How Does Garfield’s Peter Deal With Gwen’s Death?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

During the battle between Spider-Man and Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy falls from atop a clock tower, and in a moment mirroring the iconic comic scene, Peter tries to save her with webbing. In the Marvel comics, Gwen’s neck is snapped by the whiplash, but in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, she appears to hit her head on the ground. Either way, gravity can be a cruel mistress. The end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reveals that Peter eventually returned to his Spider-Man gig, and is seen battling Rhino on the streets of New York, attempting to move on from Gwen’s death. Had Marc Webb been afforded another outing, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 undoubtedly would’ve examined Peter’s grief and guilt more closely. That responsibility now falls to the MCU.

Does Garfield’s Peter Meet His Own MJ?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

Hand-in-hand with Peter’s trauma over Gwen Stacy is the question of whether Andrew Garfield ever met Mary Jane Watson. A young(er) Shailene Woodley was cast as MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her part was cut in an attempt to streamline the sequel’s already cluttered story. Upon his MCU debut, Andrew Garfield can reveal whether his Peter Parker began a relationship with MJ in the years following Gwen’s death. It’ll also be interesting to see whether they experienced the same roller coaster as Maguire and Dunst, or whether Gwen’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 taught Peter to better appreciate those he loves. If Garfield’s MJ makes an appearance in the MCU, casting Woodley in the role might offer a measure of redemption after being cut previously.

What Was Really Going On With Peter’s Parents In Amazing Spider Man?

SpiderMan 3 The Biggest Questions The MCU Can Answer About Maguire & Garfield

Ask a Spider-Man fan about Peter’s backstory in The Amazing Spider-Man, and the response will likely be a mixture of groans and chain-stroking contemplation. Webb’s franchise takes the bold step of spinning a mystery through Peter’s parents, with Richard Parker responsible for developing radioactive spiders at Oscorp and making them respond solely to his son’s DNA. It’s revealed that Richard fled to prevent Norman Osborn weaponizing his research, but several vital questions remain. For example, what did Oscorp plan to do with the cross-species genetic program? And what were the true circumstances surrounding the deaths of Peter’s parents? The plot thickens, as a deleted scene at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would’ve seen Richard Parker make a surprise return.

The Amazing Spider-Man fans shouldn’t expect Andrew Garfield to arrive in the MCU and give a blow-by-blow account of his father’s shady past. The movie will have more pressing matters to address. But Garfield’s Peter may drop a line or reference that offers more insight into the feud between the Parker and Osborn families in that universe.

What Happened To Sony’s Sinister Six?

The final moments of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could be considered the biggest waste of a superhero movie tease in Marvel’s cinematic history. From his prison cell, Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn meets with the shadowy Gentleman to discuss the formation of a supervillain group united against Spider-Man – the Sinister Six. Back at Oscorp, the Gentleman is then seen strolling past the Vulture’s wings, Doc Ock’s arms, and a power suit in the shape of a Rhino, clearly laying out Sony’s plans for a Sinister Six movie. Due to the cancellation of the Amazing Spider-Man series and the return of Peter Parker to the Marvel fold, these plans were nixed.

Sony and Marvel now appear to be setting up a new Sinister Six, with previous versions of Dr. Octopus, Electro and Vulture returning, while, Morbius, Mysterio and Scorpion are waiting in the wings. Once again, a Sinister Six movie appears inevitable, but with the multiverse very much active, the team likely won’t be the same iteration that was teased in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After all, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock has no use for the Octopus limbs seen at Oscorp. This could mean Andrew Lincoln’s Peter Parker has already faced an entirely different incarnation of the Sinister Six, and he might warn Tom Holland about the supervillain team coming to bite him in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.
