SpiderMan & 9 More Unrealized James Cameron Projects That Couldve Been Great

James Cameron usually makes smart choices when he chooses a new project. His last two directorial efforts, Avatar and Titanic, have each become the highest grossing movie ever made. He’s also helmed two of the greatest sequels of all time, Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

While most directors pump out a movie every year, or at least every couple of years, Cameron is notoriously picky. In the past three decades, Cameron has directed just three movies. He’s developed a lot more projects than that, but many of them haven’t come to fruition. Some of those unrealized projects seemed really promising and in a different parallel world, these movies may have been blockbusters and trendsetters.

10 An R-Rated Spider-Man

Long before Sam Raimi made his iconic Spider-Man trilogy, Cameron developed an adaptation that would’ve starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Peter Parker and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doctor Octopus. Cameron’s story wildly deviated from the comics (which was par for the course in terms of superhero movies of the time), but seeing his own unique take on the property would’ve been interesting.

While Cameron’s dark, edgy, mature, R-rated version of the Spidey mythos wouldn’t have been for everyone, his singular creative vision would’ve resulted in a much better movie than The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

9 Alien 5

When Sigourney Weaver was dissatisfied with Joss Whedon’s script for a fifth Alien movie, Cameron expressed interest in returning to the franchise. He initially planned to direct a fifth Alien movie about the Xenomorphs’ origins, but later decided to just write and produce the sequel. Instead, original Alien mastermind Ridley Scott would direct his script.

The project was eventually scrapped when Fox executives decided to focus their efforts on Alien vs. Predator. The Xenomorph origin storyline was repurposed for Prometheus, though it’s more of a prequel than a sequel. A proper Alien 5 (tentatively titled Alien: Awakening) written and directed by Neill Blomkamp was considered but ultimately scrapped following the lukewarm to negative reception of Alien: Covenant.

8 A Planet Of The Apes Reboot

After the critical and commercial failure of Battle for the Planet of the Apes in 1973, the Planet of the Apes franchise was considered to be dead. In 1996, James Cameron began developing a reboot that he would write and produce. Peter Hyams was set to direct, while Arnold Schwarzenegger would star as George Taylor.

In Cameron’s version, Caesar was going to travel through time and discover a more technologically advanced ape society. Cameron’s eventually left the project to make Titanic and the 2001 reboot was helmed by Tim Burton, which sucked. It would be yet another decade before the apes finally got the reboot they deserved in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

7 At The Mountains Of Madness

Cameron was once interested in directing a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Guillermo del Toro was set to direct, while Cameron wanted to shoot it in 3D and cast Tom Cruise in the lead role.

Unfortunately, the story was a tough sell to studios. Cameron and del Toro all but abandoned the project following the release of Ridley Scott’s similarly themed Prometheus, which is basically a retelling of Lovecraft’s story of a doomed expedition and the truth behind humanity’s creation, only now with Xenomorphs.

6 True Lies 2

One of Cameron’s most underrated movies is the action-packed True Lies. While it has some questionable racial politics and its treatment of its female lead has been criticized as misogynistic, it’s also a rollicking spy action romp with plenty of spectacular set pieces.

According to Tom Arnold, Cameron wrote a script for a True Lies sequel after making Titanic. Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to reprise his role as Harry Tasker, but the sequel never came to fruition. Reportedly, the draft was finished around 2001 but in light of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Cameron decided that a movie where Schwarzenegger’s action hero stops a terrorist plot in bombastic blockbuster style was tasteless and rude.

5 Heavy Metal

As far back as 2008, David Fincher was working on a remake of the R-rated animated sci-fi anthology movie Heavy Metal. The projected budget was $50 million. Each segment would be directed by a different filmmaker, one of whom would’ve been James Cameron, who was set to executive-produce alongside Fincher.

The other directors tapped to helm a segment include Zack Snyder, Guillermo del Toro, and Tim Miller. Fincher and Miller ended up retooling the unproduced Heavy Metal remake as the original Netflix series Love Death + Robots, and a proper remake of Heavy Metal continues to languish on the drawing board.

4 Wolverine & The X-Men

In the late ‘80s, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont entered negotiations with James Cameron’s production company over the film rights to the X-Men comics. Cameron would produce, with Kathryn Bigelow directing and Gary Goldman writing the script.

The movie was going to be called Wolverine and the X-Men. Bob Hoskins was cast as Logan and Angela Bassett was cast as Storm. However, the project was scrapped when Cameron became more interested in making the aforementioned Spider-Man movie.

3 Last Train To Hiroshima

Back in 2010, right after the groundbreaking release of Avatar, James Cameron began work on a biopic of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a Japanese man who survived the atomic bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

The movie was reportedly titled Last Train to Hiroshima and would’ve been based on Charles R. Pellegrino’s book of the same name. However, the project slipped into development hell when Cameron decided to focus on the Avatar sequels and here we are, ten years later. At least those Avatar sequels are reportedly near completion (?)

2 A Proper Terminator 3

Throughout the ‘90s, after the immense success of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, James Cameron expressed interest in making a third movie. However, he moved on to other projects and a disappointing Terminator 3 – Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines – was made without Cameron’s involvement.

Cameron did eventually get to make his own sequel to T2 – Terminator: Dark Fate, which retconned the previous installments and came after three Terminators he didn’t work on – but it wasn’t the same as if he’d made it from the beginning.

1 A Fantastic Voyage Remake

In the late ‘90s, James Cameron wrote a script for a remake of Fantastic Voyage. Although he didn’t intend to direct it, he did want to get the movie made. Roland Emmerich was tapped to direct a Fantastic Voyage remake in 2007, but he didn’t like Cameron’s script.

The remake has since been passed from director to director, including Paul Greengrass and Shawn Levy (who wanted to shoot in 3D). The most recent word was that Guillermo del Toro would direct, but he put it on hold to make The Shape of Water.
