SpiderMan Comics Just Referenced The Best SpiderVerse Meme

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #61 from Nick Spencer and Patrick Gleason

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man, the former Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk just referenced his own line and popular meme from Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 2018. In recent years, Fisk has actually forgone his direct role in New York’s criminal enterprise as the city’s premier Kingpin in favor of being the city’s elected mayor. However, this has merely given him more power and influence, granting his old territories to the rest of the criminal underworld in exchange for their cooperation, keeping New York’s crime more organized than ever before. As a result, business has certainly been booming.

Fisk became the new mayor of New York shortly after his efforts to take care of the innocent during Secret Empire when the city was trapped within a Darkforce dome, purely with the motive to build up goodwill for the upcoming election after the danger had passed (though he still had to rig the election in his favor). Since that time, Mayor Wilson Fisk has used his new position of power for his own ends behind the scenes, all while appearing to be the ideal leader to the public.

Now, Amazing Spider-Man #61 from writer Nick Spencer with art by Patrick Gleason sees Fisk determined to secure the Lifeline Tablet, which will allow him to resurrect the dead when combined with the Tablet of Death and Entropy already in his possession. While the pieces of the Lifeline Tablet have been gathered and protected by the former smaller time villain Boomerang with Spider-Man’s help (they’re roommates), Fisk is finally ready to make his play, assembling all of New York’s major crime bosses in order to recruit them to capture Boomerang. It’s here during this clandestine meeting that Fisk references one of the most popular lines and memes from Into the Spider-Verse, coming from Fisk himself.

Considering the fact that Fisk has all of these crime bosses under her thumb is a true testament to his power, and he’s finally ready to cash in. Not only that, but his position as Mayor allows him to reward whoever’s successful with a criminal’s ultimate dream: a literal ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ card, allowing the holder to operate with complete autonomy thanks to the protection’s they’d receive from Fisk’s office. Naturally, this is quite the coveted prize, and it seems likely that every criminal gang is going to try their hand at bringing Boomerang in to Fisk. After all, the former Kingpin being the mayor is the best thing that’s ever happened to them, and all of their operations have seen high returns in the years since.

While it’s seemingly a small line in this issue and in the film, the scene did become a very popular meme on the internet. As such, it does seem as though Fisk’s reference to this line is intentional on the part of writer Nick Spencer, serving as a quick but fun easter egg for Marvel and Spider-Man fans to find in the issue from Marvel Comics.
