One of Marvel Studio’s biggest hits as of late is the animated series What If, so it came as little surprise to fans when the company announced a new slate of cartoon offerings. The most exciting of these upcoming programs is arguably Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which promises to deliver an origin story for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peter Parker.

The announcement has left viewers excited by the possibilities for this animated venture, with many theorizing over which characters could feature. Twitter, in particular, has been alight with many suggestions of individuals from the comics that fans would like to see, with a number of names mentioned from across Spider-Man’s vast comic-book history.

Liz Toomes

Spider-Man freshman year for sure. I rlly want to see Liz again, she was so neat in homecoming

The MCU Peter’s first girlfriend is Liz Toomes, who features throughout the runtime of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Despite her popularity with moviegoers, Parker’s romantic partner has yet to return to the current Spider-Man franchise. Twitter user @TitanicShipper hasn’t given up hope, however, with the tweeter expressing hope for Liz to appear in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Liz Toomes’ inclusion in this animated series could allow for her romance with the web-slinger to be fleshed out further. Spider-Man: Freshman Year would be the perfect opportunity to show their relationship starting to blossom, as Peter tries to juggle his personal life with his early years at high school. With many fans disappointed at Liz’s surprisingly brief appearance within the MCU, this series could offer a form of redemption for Marvel Studios’ bizarre decision to write the character out.

Aunt May

if aunt may dies in nwh, the spider-man freshman year animated show will be more painful to watch knowing that she was always there for peter from the beginning and will soon lose him😭

Despite being an especially iconic comics character, there are still plenty of things audiences may not realize about Aunt May. Peter’s protective guardian figure is prominent throughout the superhero’s comic-book stories, and fans are keen to learn more about this endearing character in the upcoming cartoon. Twitter’s @marvelbelova is especially keen to see the series explore May’s loyalty towards Peter further.

With fans worried for May’s survival in Spider-Man: No Way Home, many believe Spider-Man: Freshman Year would be the ideal moment to explore Peter’s dynamic with his aunt further. May is one of the awkward teen’s most trusted allies, as she guides Peter through school life in the absence of his birth parents. If fan predictions of her death in No Way Home are true, then this show could act as a fitting send-off for this kind-hearted lady.

Big Wheel

Spider-Man Freshman Year will be a perfect opportunity to introduce villains into the MCU that would never be in a full movie, such as Big Wheel or Overdrive

Spider-Man’s villains are among some of the Marvel Universe’s wackiest, but few are bizarre as Big Wheel. With help from the Tinkerer, corrupt businessman Jackson Weele undergoes his criminal activities from inside a giant motorized Ferris Wheel. Weeles’ bonkers machine is popular among fans such as @OmnipoTina, with audiences clamoring to see the villain make his debut in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Big Wheel’s barmy design would suit a more cartoony aesthetic well. With the Ferris Wheel equipped with everything from mechanical arms to loaded machine guns, this criminal’s wacky choice of transport would allow the animators to fully embrace the animated medium’s more outlandish stylings. Big Wheel as a character may not work for a live-action feature, but an animated series could prove a natural fit.

Tony Stark

so like, we can all agree the spider-man freshman year show is gonna end with peter walking home and seeing tony stark talking to aunt may… right?

It’s well known that Tony Stark has been a major player in the MCU since its early beginnings, with the philanthropist playboy having done some of the nicest things for those around him. With the iron-clad superhero having featured heavily in MCU Peter’s story, many fans including @isuperebba are expecting him to play a role in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Stark’s inclusion would be a neat way to tie the series into the MCU’s continuity, as the animated show is set to explore events proceeding Peter’s first appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Tony’s appearance could come as a lead-in to the scene where the teen discovers the billionaire genius flirting with his aunt, allowing fans to witness Tony’s arrival at his home from Peter’s perspective.

Jackal

Really hoping with Spider-Man: Freshman Year focusing on his origin and early days they’ll get to use some smaller villains. Give me some goofy ass characters like Big Wheel and Jackal. I’d be so down for something like Tombstone to be the overarching villain too

Best known as Miles Warren, the Jackal has battled Spider-Man many times in the comics. Whilst the character has yet to receive his big-screen debut, fans are hoping for the geneticist to make his debut in Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Twitter user @notthelogan in particular has expressed keen interest, as he expresses his wish for “goofy-ass characters” to feature.

With the Jackal being well-known for his cloning experiments, his inclusion could allow the cartoon to explore more heightened concepts. An episode where Spider-Man deals with an army of clones offers plenty of tantalizing prospects, with the web-slinger fighting copies of various Spider-Man characters. The character is also trained in martial arts, which could lead to some exciting action sequences which are sure to thrill fans of the MCU.

Gwen Stacy

SPIDER-MAN FRESHMAN YEAR…. DOES THAT MEAN UNCLE BEN… OR GWEN..

Considered by many to be the best character from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy is one of Spider-Man’s most iconic love interests. Currently, the high school student has yet to appear within the MCU, however some fans such as @prkwrs are anticipating a possible debut for the character in this animated series.

Gwen could fulfill an important role within the Marvel Studios animation. Romance is a key theme across many Spider-Man stories, and the inclusion of Peter’s first love interest would open the series up to many popular plotlines from the comics. Should Liz also appear, then Gwen could also form a fun rivalry with the Vulture’s daughter, as they both vie for Peter’s affections.

Grey Gargoyle

this is how I get Grey Gargoyle in the MCU

A major antagonist for Iron Man and Thor in the comics, Grey Gargoyle has also battled Spider-Man within the pages of Marvel Comics. In spite of his past history with these iconic heroes, however, the character remains absent from the MCU. Fans are keen to see this stone villain pop up in Spider-Man: Freshman Year, with Twitter user @dykeules, in particular, expressing her interest.

Grey Gargoyle’s unique abilities would make him an interesting opponent for the young Peter to face. The criminal’s powers see him capable of turning anything he touches to stone, which could provide a worthy challenge for the wall-crawler. This malevolent being’s powers make him unlike any other pre-existing villain in the MCU, and his inclusion would therefore offer audiences something truly unique.

Uncle Ben

best case scenario theory: no way home has Tobey Maguire reprise his role as Spider-Man but he also portrays Uncle Ben which makes it more emotional when Tom’s Peter meets him Tobey then voices Uncle Ben in the Spider-Man freshman year tv show idk that’d be cool

Regarded by comics readers as one of Spider-Man’s best non-superhero characters, Uncle Ben is an especially important figure. Peter’s beloved uncle acts as the main source of inspiration for Peter’s heroic deeds in the comics, however despite a few references the character is rarely acknowledged within the MCU. Fans are hopeful Spider-Man: Freshman Year will feature Uncle Ben more prominently, with Twitter’s @SmiffyLel expressing her own desire to see Tobey Maguire voice the iconic role.

Peter’s uncle is vital to Spider-Man’s origin story, and his inclusion in this series would allow fans to finally witness the events which inspired MCU Peter to fight crime. Added to this, the character’s inclusion would give this cartoon ample opportunity to explore the close relationship between the high school student and his uncle, adding some interesting new details to MCU Peter’s backstory.

Paste Pot Pete

Not initially a Spider-Man villain but… Paste Pot Pete, that bit never gets old!

Otherwise known as Peter Petruski, Paste Pot Pete is one of Marvel Comics’ more outlandish creations. The villain has featured within Marvel’s comic books since the Sixties and despite his ludicrous nature has proven himself to be a capable criminal mastermind. The character has proven to be extremely popular, with fans including @MisterE231 wishing for Paste Pot Pete to make his MCU debut in Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Whereas the character would perhaps not work so well in live-action, Paste-Pot Pete’s sillier aspects would suit the more exaggerated approach of an animated show. The villain’s primary weapon of a paste gun seems a natural fit for a cartoon series, where crazier concepts can be embraced more easily. Paste Pot Pete could offer an enjoyably zany side to Spider-Man’s adventures.

Scorpion

scorpions gonna be the main villain in spider-man freshman year calling it

Spider-Man’s MCU movies have introduced audiences to some of the web-slinger’s most famous foes, including Adrian Toomes’ fellow prison inmate Mac Gargan. In the comics Mac adopts the supervillain mantle of Scorpion, however this has yet to happen within the MCU. Fans are hoping for Scorpion to finally suit up in Spider-Man: Freshman Year, with Twitter user @SmiffyLel appearing especially enthusiastic.

Mac’s potential appearance in this cartoon series could provide some intriguing background on this otherwise underused character. With Spider-Man: Homecoming having referenced various crimes he committed before encountering Peter, this program could shed new light on Scorpion’s early criminal deeds. The villain has yet to receive a major focus in the MCU, so a more prominent appearance feels long overdue.
