SpiderMan Miles Morales Modernizes The Superhero Genre

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales follows up on the brand new universe Insomniac Games created on PS4, this time focusing on the fledgling hero. Miles Morales is an entirely different hero from Peter Parker, and his skills are still rough around the edges.

Whether it’s in the comics or the animated film Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales, as a character, has helped further representation in the superhero genre. The PS5’s version of Miles does the same thing, and perhaps most interesting about the hero is how in touch he is with modern times.

Miles is young and in touch with the grand diversity of New York City. The first Marvel’s Spider-Man showed Peter Parker using more technology than before, but Miles Morales doubles down on that. It helps modernize the superhero genre in both a big sense and a small one.

Miles Morales Is a True Modern Superhero

Miles Morales is 17 years old during the events of the PS5 game, making him one of the youngest heroes out there. He’s a teenager in every sense of the word, from his awkward interactions with his crush to the flamboyant way he swings through the city. Everything about the PS5 game is meant to reinforce the youthful energy of Miles, right down to the hip-hop inspired soundtrack. The most interesting aspect, however, is how Miles Morales integrates a smartphone into the core experience. The first game introduced an in-game social media platform that players could read, but Miles Morales takes that a step further.

Miles’ friend Ganke develops a new app for the hero’s phone called The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man app. The app lets citizens connect directly with Spider-Man, sending Miles any requests for help from across the city. Technically the FNSM app simply replaces the Crimes and Activities missions from the first game, but it’s an absolutely brilliant in-universe explanation. It really highlights how little other superhero stories actually involve modern technology and especially social media.

Miles is obviously savvy with technology and social media, and the app lets him really lean into that friendly neighborhood Spider-Man persona. Smartphones are vital parts of people’s lives, and they’ve completely changed so much about the world, from instant reporting of events to the potential of augmented reality. It’s refreshing to see a superhero game have such a contemporary take on both its world and hero, especially in a city as interesting as New York. Miles Morales is a modern hero in every sense, and with popularity skyrocketing he’ll likely inform the next generation of heroes, just like the original Spider-Man did so many years ago.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is currently available on PS4 and PS5.
