Warning: contains spoilers for Fantastic Four #37!

Marvel’s Spider-Man may be a superhero to the city of New York, but in actuality he is a terrible friend who doesn’t truly know how to help others. Peter Parker is admittedly far from the perfect superhero – his most memorable adventures tend to be those in which he fails spectacularly – but he certainly tries his best and makes a sincere effort to learn from his mistakes. However, in Fantastic Four #37, written by Dan Slott with art by Nico Leon and colors by Dono Sánchez-Almara, Peter Parker proves that despite his years of character growth and development, he is still an immature teenager on the inside.

In previous Fantastic Four issues, the Human Torch cheated on his girlfriend with the fiancé of Doctor Doom (who admitted it at Doom’s wedding, seconds before the two were to be married). In an act of cruel mercy, Doom spared Johnny Storm’s life – but simultaneously cursed him with the inability to extinguish his own flames, forever condemning him to be “…a true Human Torch.” Johnny’s flame now burns incredibly hot, and is unable to socialize with others, stay inside any room other than a specially-designed flameproof shelter, and even eat regular food without it burning in his hands. Johnny is naturally lonely on Halloween night, and Ben Grimm is too busy with his own family to spend time with him, so the Thing arranges a meeting between the Torch and Spider-Man.

Wearing a protective suit (which, even designed by the genius Mister Fantastic, still radiates heat), the Human Torch meets Spider-Man atop the Statue of Liberty. Peter insists he can take the heat, but immediately backtracks. “You are freaky hot! Back that up, Storm! Make like a truck! Beep, beep! WAY back!” When the Human Torch explains his situation concerning his inability to ‘flame off’ for the foreseeable future – and mentions that Reed is unable to cure him – Peter can only manage a weak “Um…hang in there?”

Spider-Man follow up his half-hearted advice by talking about his own problems in his life; he mentions every instance in which body underwent metamorphoses (including being turned into a lizard and growing extra arms). When the Human Torch mentions cheating on his girlfriend with the would-be bride of Doctor Doom, Peter can only say “I got nothing. That sucks.” Admittedly, Johnny was clearly in the wrong, but as far as making him feel better concerning his current fiery plight, Spider-Man’s attempts are laughably anemic.

Peter has been accused of putting himself before others in the past (notably by Mephisto himself), but the conversation with the Human Torch only solidifies his selfish tendencies. Even back in Amazing Fantasy #15, Peter was filled with anger at the world – long before the fateful spider-bite. Spider-Man may be an upstanding hero, but he has plenty of internal issues that he is no closer to solving than Reed Richards is to extinguishing the Human Torch.
