Stranger Things is a show that likes to play around with expectations. Characters might seem cliché and obvious at first, only to reveal something unexpected later on. There is perhaps no character on Stranger Things that has changed more from the beginning of the show than Steve Harrington.
Steve seemed like he would be the typical popular jerk who dates one of the main characters on the show, but as the series went on, he showed more layers. Now Steve feels like a totally new guy, despite some obvious stubborn traits. Here are some ways Steve has changed from Season 1 of Stranger Things and some ways he’s stayed the same.
10 Changed: Selfless
Steve was never as bad a guy as he seemed, but he did have a definite selfish streak to him. When Barb went missing in Season 1, Steve was more concerned with his parents finding out he had a party than actually helping to find Barb.
As the series went on, he started to realize what a jerk he’s been and started thinking of others more than he thought of himself. He put his life on the line on multiple occasions and started looking out for people in a very protective way.
9 Same: Arrogant
As the popular guy in school, it’s not surprising that Steve had a bit of an ego problem early in the series. He thought he was the coolest guy around and would walk through the halls of their high school with total confidence in himself.
Like most popular high school people, a lot of that fame faded once he left school, but Steve has managed to stay a pretty confident guy regardless. He still thinks he’s the coolest guy around and still walks with confidence even if it might not be so true anymore.
8 Changed: Romance
Steve was introduced as the love interest for Nancy Wheeler in Season 1 and it certainly seemed like he was nothing but bad news. Nancy was the smart and strait-laced girl while he was the smooth ladies’ man. It seemed at first that he was just looking to score with Nancy, but we then see that he genuinely cares for her.
Unfortunately, they were not the right match and Steve was eventually heartbroken when Nancy chooses Jonathan over him. It’s interesting to see someone we initially thought to be heartless lothario struggling to find his perfect match.
7 Same: Charm
Even when we weren’t sure if Steve was a good guy or a bad guy, there was something about him that was hard not to like. He has a very charming personality even when we might not agree with everything he’s doing.
He is a kind person, an outgoing guy and surprisingly funny. It is that goofy side that really endears you to him and while he might have hidden it a little more when he was the popular kid, it’s clear that’s the real kind of person he is. That charm has helped us to root for him since the beginning.
6 Changed: Popular
Steve might have changed for the better but it caused him to have something of a fall from grace in terms of his social standings. When we first meet him, he is the king of the high school, a good-looking guy who is also a star athlete. But as he becomes less preoccupied with popularity, it begins to fade.
By Season 2, he is already not seen as the same king of the school. When Billy comes to town, he seems to take over that position. By the time Season 3 comes around, he is something of a laughingstock even with that same old confidence.
5 Same: Immature
While Steve eventually starts taking more responsibilities for his actions and goes through a lot of positive growth, there’s no denying he is still a pretty immature guy. Even though he finds himself in the midst of potentially world-ending threats, he can’t seem to help acting like a big kid.
When Steve starts hanging out with the younger kids more, it starts to become apparent that he is probably even more immature than they are. He might step up to when needed but he is probably not going to handle it like an adult.
4 Changed: Kind
In that first season of the show, Steve almost seemed to be playing a part. He was the cool kid in school, so he seemed to think he was supposed to be a jerk to people less popular than him. This led to him doing some pretty mean things to Jonathan and even Nancy.
However, Steve seemed to recognize that kind of behavior wasn’t really him and quickly changed his attitude. The Steve that we know now would never behave in such a cruel way. He has embraced his warmer side and is generally kinder to everyone.
3 Same: Act First, Think Later
Steve has been a valuable member of the group that finds themselves fighting against the forces of evil on numerous occasions. He has stepped into the hero role nicely, put his life on the line frequently, and saved his friends more than once.
However, Steve has never been the brains of the group. His strategic thinking is not his strongest suit and he prefers to act on instinct and see how it works out. Sometimes it can save the day, other times it can get them in more troubled.
2 Changed: Friends
Sometimes it just takes the right group of friends to turn a person around. Aside from Nancy, the people Steve hung out with in the first season were horribly insufferable people. They were the kind of mean and self-centered popular kids that Steve could have become if he didn’t change.
Luckily, he realizes how miserable they are and ditches them. Few people expected that his new best friend would be Dustin, but they prove to be a perfect pair. Steve embraces his inner geek with Dustin and the Season 3 addition of Robin is another great friend who helps Steve continue to be a better person.
1 Same: Brave
Whatever Steve’s shortcomings might have been early on, he always proved himself a hero when it was needed. While he is understandably freaked out and confused when he is introduced to the world of Demogorgons, he is immediately willing to join the fight.
As the series goes on, he continues to show how brave he is by sticking up for the younger kids and being their protector. Though he is often terrified by the situations he finds himself in, he doesn’t hesitate to take on the forces of evil.
