Peter Parker has been the star of almost every Spider-Movie made to date, but the supporting casts are just as iconic as the web-slinger himself.

SpiderMan The Best Character From Every Movie So Far (That Isnt Peter Parker)

With Spider-Man: No Way Home scheduled to hit theatres across the globe at the end of the year, it’s time to take a trip through the history books when it comes to everybody’s favorite bug-herp. The first Spider-Man movie hit theatres back in 2002, competing against the likes of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones at the box office.

And, since then, there have been seven other blockbusters with Peter Parker as the main character. Obviously, as the protagonist, Peter usually steals the show. But the other characters featured in the movies can be just as magnetic as the web-slinger!

8 Spider-Man: Norman Osborn

For the first Spider-Man movie, Sony knew they needed a brilliant villain. So they decided to go with the Green Goblin, giving him a costume different from the comic book character. While he may look different, without the purple and with steelier attire, he’s just as evil as in the source material.

Willem Dafoe gives a magnificent performance as the Goblin, making life difficult for both Peter and the citizens of New York City. He clocks up quite the body count, murdering board members of Oscorp and coming precariously close to killing both Aunt May and Mary Jane Watson. He dies at the end of the movie – but there’s talk he’ll return for No Way Home later this year.

7 Spider-Man 2: Otto Octavius

The Sam Raimi trilogy did divide opinion – but just about everybody can accept how brilliant Spider-Man 2 is. Even in a day and age where superhero movies release with increasing regularity, it ranks up there with the best the genre has to offer. And part of the reason it’s held in such high regard is the performance of Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius, who turns bad when a science experiment goes wrong.

Octavius is a formidable opponent for Peter, matching him on brains and brawn. Spider-Man only ends up triumphing when the deranged scientist realizes the error of his ways and decides to abandon his experiment to destroy New York. Octavius, like the Green Goblin, is set to be back for No Way Home – with Molina already confirming his return in a recent interview with Variety.

6 Spider-Man 3: Harry Osborn

Sure, Flint Marko is a strong bad guy in Spider-Man 3. And Topher Grace’s Venom isn’t bad either. However, James Franco’s Harry Osborn steals the show with a stellar performance, showing Peter’s best friend to be conflicted as he hunts down Spidey on the orders of his late father – who had revealed the truth about his Green Goblin past at the end of the previous film.

His costume wasn’t the best but Harry provides some of the movie’s more emotional moments, such as when he fights Peter in his house, initially refuses to help save Mary Jane from the aforementioned villains, and when he dies after deciding to try and save the day. It would have been interesting seeing Peter and Mary Jane Watson’s life without Harry in it but, unfortunately, Spider-Man 4 was never made.

5 The Amazing Spider-Man: Gwen Stacy

When it comes to the Raimi trilogy, one complaint is the character of Mary Jane Watson. While Kirsten Dunst gives her all as Peter’s love interest, the script paints her very much as a damsel in distress. She doesn’t do much fighting herself, instead relying on Spider-Man to save her in all three movies. By the end of Spider-Man 3, it was getting a little tiresome.

So when Sony decided to press the reboot button and release The Amazing Spider-Man back in the summer of 2012, Emma Stone was cast as Gwen Stacy. And Gwen, unlike Mary Jane, certainly gets her hands dirty. She actively works with Peter to stop Doctor Curt Connors from turning the people of New York into giant lizards and more than holds her own. Deciding to make the female protagonist more of Peter’s equal was a wise decision because it was unlike anything that had happened in a Spider-Man movie before.

4 The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Electro

Another character reportedly returning for No Way Home is Jamie Foxx’s Electro. Max Dillon is a quiet, law-abiding citizen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – until there’s an accident as Oscorp. He then becomes electrically charged and, when Spider-Man makes a mockery of him during an epic showdown in Times Square, he decides to get his revenge on everybody who has previously wronged him.

Electro is another difficult villain for Peter to beat and he plays a role in Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn becoming the Green Goblin. Foxx clearly enjoyed himself portraying the villain of the movie and it’ll be fascinating to see what the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the character does when he makes his return. Having been defeated by Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, he’ll certainly be out for some revenge.

3 Spider-Man Homecoming: Ned

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is able to save the day in Spider-Man: Homecoming, preventing Michael Keaton’s Vulture from stealing a significant amount of Tony Stark’s technology and winning the faith of Iron Man in the process. However, his victory wouldn’t have been possible without some help from Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, who acts as a perfect partner in crime for Peter.

Ned is a confidant, keeping his friend’s secret when he finds out about Peter’s alter ego. He works well with Holland’s character over the course of the movie and is even able to stop Bokeem Woodbine’s Shocker during their battle on prom night. Had he not intervened, then it’s possible Vulture would have succeeded in stealing the tech – something that would have spelled trouble for the world.

2 Spider-Man Far From Home: Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal very nearly played Peter Parker during the Raimi trilogy, having been lined up to replace Tobey Maguire at a time where the actor was struggling with a back injury. However, in 2019, fans finally got to see him in a movie starring the web-slinger – with Gyllenhaal giving a superb performance as Quinten Beck in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

He’s believable as a good guy during the first half of the movie, appearing serious when he talks about a multi-verse existing. But then comes the twist that he’s actually eager to exploit Peter by acquiring E.D.I.T.H, Tony Stark’s super-powerful glasses. This was a welcome, if not entirely surprise and the final battle between the two makes for epic viewing. Mysterio’s illusions are also excellently executed by the special effects team and his death is a shame because, as things stand, it looks like he won’t be back for more.

1 Into The Spider-Verse: Miles Morales

Peter isn’t actually the main protagonist of 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse. While two versions of the character appear, both voiced by Nicolas Cage, it’s Miles Morales who takes center stage. It was the first-ever portrayal of Miles in a movie and it doesn’t disappoint, spectacularly bringing the character to life.

Fans are made to feel genuinely sympathetic to Miles, who struggles with his new powers, the responsibility they bring, and also with winning around his police officer father. Therefore, when he downs Wilson Fisk at the end of the movie, it’s genuinely satisfying to see. He’s another conflicted hero who turns things around and how Miles behaves when Into the Spider-Verse 2 hits theatres next year promises to be intriguing. Especially if Fisk is also involved…
