SpiderMan’s New Venom Costume is Scarier Than the Original

Warning! Spoilers to Spider-Man: The Spider’s Shadow #2

Spider-Man: The Spider’s Shadow has introduced a new version of Venom which may be scarier than the original. This latest of Marvel’s classic What If storylines imagines a different direction for Peter Parker where he let his black symbiote suit consume and corrupt him. As the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man takes a more brutal approach to fighting crime, his appearance and relationship with the symbiote changes, leaving a version of Peter that even Eddie Brock would be scared of.

During 1984’s Secret Wars, Peter Parker’s attempt to repair his battered costume resulted in him discovering an entity that enhanced his current superpowers and gave him a few new abilities which assisted his crime-fighting once he returned to Earth. This led to his alien costume taking control of his body without his knowledge. Eventually, Peter got checked out by the Fantastic Four who concluded the suit was a symbiote that was attempting to permanently bond to Peter. Although the symbiote resisted, Peter was able to reject the creature and return to Spider-Man in his original costume while the symbiote would later find a host in former reporter Eddie Brock, using their mutual hatred of Spider-Man to bond together as his newest enemy; Venom.

In Spider-Man: Spider’s Shadow by Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth, and Joe Caramagna, readers see Peter’s strange behavior sending him to the Fantastic Four but when given the opportunity to separate from the symbiote, he chooses not to, aggressively resisting Mr. Fantastic’s offers to help. The real change occurs when the recently humiliated Hobgoblin follows him to Aunt May’s house and attacks, having figured out his secret identity. Although the symbiote’s weaknesses don’t allow him to save Aunt May, Peter’s guilt and anger are taken out on the Hobgoblin, his appearance subtly changing as he murders Hobgoblin. This brutal new trend continues as Spider-Man fights and kills Shocker and Scorpion as well as their employer, Wilson Fisk.

The symbiote originally enhanced Peter’s superhuman abilities, giving him unlimited webbing, a new appearance, and even the ability to create whatever ensemble he thought of. When Eddie Brock became Venom, he was granted similar abilities including Spider-Man’s old look which he added fangs, a long drooling tongue, and a far more muscular build. This version of Venom is an evolution of Peter’s growing darkness, the symbiote manipulating his anger, guilt, and sense of responsibility into a willingness to do whatever’s necessary. The suit’s multiple eyes and limited expressions leave little room for comedy and feel like a colder, more horror-inspired version of Spider-Man. The creepiest detail is that the symbiote has taken complete control, with Peter is completely aware of the symbiote’s decisions and fine with these increasingly violent actions.

Marvel’s What If’s have become a Marvel tradition, allowing creators to show different outcomes of famous Marvel events or moments in its history that could have happened. In this case, Peter’s choice to not reject the symbiote ended up creating a version of Venom that became more of a villain than Eddie or his successors ever were. As the new Venom body count continues to rise, one can only wonder how the newly assembled Sinister Six or Spider-Man’s former allies will handle this fallen hero who hopefully won’t eat anybody anytime soon.
