Spiral: 10 Ways It Sets Up The Next Saw Movie

As was expected after the previews of Spiral were released, the movie has changed the Saw series going forward. Spiral did stick close to the general outline of the franchise by leaving out enough room for a sequel to continue building on the story here.

The reveal of the Jigsaw copycat is the most natural point to expand upon, with factors like Zeke Banks’ personal crusade against the villain also a factor that should come into play. Since Spiral ended on a cliffhanger and left plenty of aspects in the movie with potential for more, the follow-up has already been set up in several ways.

10 The Escape Of Schenk

This is the most obvious way for Spiral to tease the next movie, seeing as Schenk was shown to escape justice. He was never implicated as the next Jigsaw Killer either, leaving him free to do so as he pleases.

The sequel can build upon the idea that Schenk is dead as this was what everyone believed until Zeke found him alive. Moreover, the next movie has set up Schenk’s escape to be part of the story as he’s clearly set to be on the run.

9 Schenk’s Willingness To Continue Copying Jigsaw

Although Schenk claimed his use of Jigsaw’s M.O. had to do with his hopes of gaining vengeance in Spiral, he also revealed that he wasn’t going to stop. The sequel is the continuation of his role as essentially the new Jigsaw.

It should see the villain branching out his activities, in that he will be going after people apart from the cops he had a vendetta against. Since Schenk bought into Jigsaw’s logic of making people appreciate life, the Spiral sequel is well placed to explore this avenue.

8 The Possibility Of Jigsaw’s Apprentices Resurfacing

While many might feel as if it doesn’t make sense for Jigsaw’s apprentices not to show up in Spiral, the movie actually did allude to their presence. This was confirmed during the discussion over there being another copycat killer before the timeline of this movie.

It was a nod toward the events of Jigsaw where Logan had copied the first Jigsaw game. Due to this, the sequel is in a position to accommodate the other apprentices now that Spiral has confirmed that there are multiple copycats the police are looking into.

7 The Confirmation That Jigsaw’s Message Has Influenced Many

Schenk’s logic behind copying Jigsaw was that he was influenced by the villain’s message. He was never an apprentice and had been taken by the idea of serving out justice, which establishes that there are many more people like him who connect with this way of thinking.

This way, the sequel can introduce more characters who agree with Jigsaw’s philosophy, meaning Schenk will be one of many to employ Jigsaw’s twisted sense of justice. Seeing as Spiral in itself is separate from other Saw movies, the sequel has been set up to tell more different stories.

6 The Survival Of Zeke

In a change from the norm, a Saw protagonist was left alive and in a position to act for the next movie. Usually, even if a protagonist had survived, their status was left ambiguous but Zeke is confirmed to have lived to tell another tale.

The most likely scenario for him is to go on a path of vengeance since he now knows that Schenk was the one behind the killings. With his father having been killed by Schenk as well, Zeke’s role in the next movie seems to be set already to make Schenk pay.

5 The Aftermath Of Marcus’s Death

The setup for the sequel should firstly deal with the aftermath of the final scene from Spiral. Here, Marcus Banks was placed in a trap that made it appear as if he was about to shoot the cops, only for them to gun him down as Schenk had planned.

Since Zeke is set to return for the follow-up, it’s definite that the fallout from Marcus’s demise will be dealt with. This will involve Zeke explaining how the whole trap was designed as well as getting himself cleared over his presence there.

4 The Reveal Of The Police’s Corrupted Activities

One thing that has been the same in every Saw movie is the police being hunted by Jigsaw. Spiral turned this up a notch by making it the entire premise of the story, with Schenk’s justification for killing the cops that he was going after the corrupted ones.

There are a lot more characters from the force that will be introduced in the next Saw movie, which should see Schenk targeting them next. He made it clear in Spiral that he did have other people he was going after, so the sequel has this aspect already set up.

Before Spiral, movies similar to Saw were those that had brutality and scares foremost as their theme. This one took a different turn by being more of a crime thriller that provided some social commentary over the dangers of corruption in the police.

This means the Saw series has altered its style and the next movie can very well fully dive into this aspect. Spiral connected the previous movies through the mystery of the copycat, but the sequel is now placed to have its story be a full-on vigilante story rather than a horror film.

1 Expanding On Schenk’s Past

As is customary for a Saw movie that comes after the reveal of a new villain, the Spiral sequel should look into the past of William Schenk. Only a small part of exposition was provided at the end of the movie as the reveal of Schenk’s true nature, but the follow-up should expand on this in full.

This will detail how Schenk started to embrace Jigsaw’s vision, along with the ways he brought his plans together. As it was in previous movies where Mark Hoffman, Amanda Young, and Jigsaw’s characters were fleshed out in subsequent entries, the next installment is positioned to do the same with Schenk.
