Spirited Away: The Main Characters, Ranked Least To Most Powerful

Spirited Away is regarded as one of Hayao Miyazaki’s best creations, a sumptuous, beautiful and colorful coming-of-age tale brimming with personality and vision. While the film certainly owes some of its sterling reputation to its visual pleasures, its cast of one-of-a-kind characters shouldn’t be forgotten, either.

Considering Spirited Away tells the story of a young girl facing countless tests when she’s made to fend for herself in a magical world, it’s no surprise that she isn’t the most powerful among the characters. But crucially, Chihiro is able to use her evolving street smarts and intuition to best even the most awe-inspiring magical figures she encounters. While many of these characters demonstrate seemingly limitless power, others are quickly revealed as downright helpless.

10 Akio & Yuko Ogino

Although Chihiro’s parents are perfectly pleasant characters during the short time viewers encounter them in Spirited Away, they’re undoubtedly some of the movie’s least powerful characters. When they get sidetracked from their intended path and drag their daughter along to explore an abandoned village, they almost immediately fall for a trap that transforms them into dim-witted animals.

The mortal pair not only lack any magic powers to navigate the spirit world but are also missing the street smarts that allow their daughter to survive her stint in the ghostly realm and rescue them.

9 Aogaeru

Although this minor character is a frog spirit and an established part of the spirit world, he clearly struggles with being pushed around by the more forceful spirits around him. When he tries to sound the alarm about a mortal’s presence at the bathhouse, he’s easily overpowered by Chihiro’s new ally Haku and becomes trapped in a floating bubble.

Later in the film, his nighttime search for gold pieces in the bathhouse’s floorboards leads to his consumption by No-Face, and the little creature can’t even put up a fight.

8 Lin

Lin certainly isn’t the least powerful spirit to be found at the bathhouse, but she definitely occupies the role of grunt. She acts as Chihiro’s trainer and as a slightly higher-ranking employee, shows the young girl the ropes of working as a cleaner. But later in her and Chihiro’s room, she reveals she feels stuck working a job she doesn’t like.

She has plans to save up for train tickets and leave the bathhouse for good, and although fans hope she realizes her plans sometime after the events of the film, the question of Lin’s fate remains a mystery.

7 Chihiro

Although she’s only a young girl, Spirited Away’s protagonist grows immensely over the course of the film’s coming-of-age narrative. Unfortunately for Chihiro, much of the strife she experiences over the film’s course derives from her lack of obvious power. She’s not only a child, but a mortal, and is severely outmatched in supernatural abilities by many of the wacky spirits she encounters around the bathhouse.

Although she’s forced to take on a low-ranking job in the bathhouse, she’s intelligent enough to win her own freedom, as well as that of Haku and her parents.

6 Boh

Boh is Yubaba’s child son, a gigantic baby who possesses the uncanny ability to speak full sentences and demonstrates a remarkable level of critical thinking compared to a human infant.

Besides his physical stature, which makes him a handful for even his mother to control, he reveals to Chihiro a cunning ability to manipulate Yubaba’s actions, unsurprisingly by throwing fits. Even so, he’s neutralized by Zeniba and transformed into a tiny mouse for the majority of the film.

5 Kamaji

Viewers see more of Kamaji’s wisdom than his raw power, but it’s implied that the ancient spirit and boiler-man is a major player in the spirit world. Not only does he have artifacts and memories from times long past, like the train tickets he gives Chihiro, but he also possesses the unique ability to craft magically enhanced soaks, baths, and assumedly other elixirs.

His magic powers aren’t anything to scoff at, either, as Kamaji demonstrates the ability to animate the ample soot contained in the boiler room into hundreds of four-limbed helpers.

4 Haku

Haku is one of Spirited Away’s most beloved characters, and for good reason. Yubaba’s reluctant henchman is a charmer and a great friend to Chihiro, but he’s also one of the film’s most powerful spirits. Unfortunately for Haku, much of the film finds him at the whims of his coercive employer.

Even before he is revealed to be a river spirit (one of two such beings viewers encounter), Haku demonstrates the ability to pull off stunning spells and a transformation into an imposing dragon form. After Chihiro finally remembers his name and thus frees Haku from his curse and subservience to Yubaba, the limits of his powers are anyone’s guess.

3 No-Face

No-Face is an oddity in the spirit world. While many of the magical realm’s other inhabitants appear related and communicate extensively, he’s a non-verbal drifter capable of disappearing at will, and he only gains a voice after consuming others.

Although many spirits appear to have supernatural abilities, practically none stand a chance against No-Face once he stages a gluttonous takeover of the bathhouse. Although at first the employees entertain his every whim in exchange for the seemingly limitless supply of gold No-Face can produce, things quickly turn sour and he starts devouring innocent spirits. Only Chihiro’s idea to feed the ravenous beast a special cake given to her by the creepy river spirit works to end No-Face’s rampage.

2 Zeniba

Zeniba is Yubaba’s twin sister, a witch who is physically identical to the bathhouse owner but who turns out to be markedly different in personality. Her magical mastery makes her one of the most obviously powerful characters in the film. She’s one of only two characters in the film who are able to best Haku (who himself is a clearly important river spirit), a dramatic confrontation Chihiro witnesses when Zeniba’s flock of paper birds attacks Haku’s dragon form.

Although viewers don’t see a ton of tricks from Zeniba, she’s able to cause all kinds of havoc in the brief time she appears in Yubaba’s suite at the bathhouse, transfiguring two of the latter’s henchmen (as well as her baby).

1 Yubaba

The wicked bathhouse owner and de-facto villain exerts the most control over the film’s narrative, and she fittingly demonstrates a level of sheer might that eclipses any other character. The evidence of her powers abound: she instigates Chihiro’s entire stint in the spirit world by turning the latter’s parents into pigs, she can fly, and she has a myriad of telepathic abilities.

But much of the power Yubaba holds is far more banal and involves her contractual relationships with her many employees; some of whom she controls entirely due to them having forgotten their own names. As a mortal child, Chihiro is no match for Yubaba as far as brute force goes, but she manages to outsmart the intimidating sorceress.
