SpongeBob SquarePants is undoubtedly one of the most lovable and recognizable cartoons in history. The show has left its mark on kids, teens, and adults with its wacky scenarios and charming characters. Of all the characters in the show, the most popular is often said to be Patrick Star.

Patrick always has ideas to help the people of Bikini Bottom. Though he means well, his ideas are never the most thought out and often backfire. His innocence makes fans feel bad for him, but there’s only so far that can go before they hate him. Here are five times Patrick has made audiences feel for him, and five where he tested their patience.

10 Felt Bad: When He Didn’t Get An Award

Compared to the other residents of Bikini Bottom, Patrick hardly does anything by himself. He normally sleeps and eats, and anything outside of that is done with his friends. It’s just who Patrick is, which doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it. Unfortunately, his indolence can cause him to get overlooked.

In the episode “Big Pink Loser,” Patrick learns that SpongeBob’s gotten numerous awards for all the things he does. When SpongeBob tries to teach Patrick how to do things so he could win one, he only messes up. Fans can’t help but feel for Patrick, who only wants to win one award.

9 Hated Him: When He Read SpongeBob’s Diary

In the episode “Little Yellow Book,” Squidward steals SpongeBob’s diary and reads all of his secrets. He makes fun of SpongeBob, which makes him so sad that he runs out of the Krusty Krab crying. While Squidward got most of the blame, other people also read SpongeBob’s diary, including Patrick.

Patrick read SpongeBob’s diary and even made fun of him for it. Not only did Patrick violate his best friend’s privacy, but he berated Squidward for doing the same thing.

8 Felt Bad: When Mr. Krabs Tortured Him

Patrick has worked at the Krusty Krab before, including in the episode “Big Pink Loser.” But, in the episode “No Hat For Pat,” Patrick falls down while working there. Mr. Krabs learns that customers were drawn by Patrick hurting himself, and he takes advantage of that.

Mr. Krabs forces Patrick to repeatedly fall down and even attempts to drop him on top of spiky sea urchins. When the customers get tired of it, Mr. Krabs blames Patrick and takes away the hat that he wanted. Mr. Krabs’s greed caused Patrick to be hurt over and over again, and Patrick only wanted a hat.

7 Hated Him: When He Wouldn’t Take Care Of Junior

Patrick and SpongeBob are not only friends, but they’ve also been parents at one point. In the episode “Rock-a-Bye Bivalve,” they find a baby scallop and name him Junior. When they can’t find his parents, they decide to take care of him on their own. However, SpongeBob ends up putting more work in than Patrick.

While SpongeBob does everything to take care of Junior, Patrick simply goes to his house and watches TV. Patrick could have at least given SpongeBob one break with caring for their baby.

6 Felt Bad: When He Got Beaten Up

Even though there are times when Patrick leaves SpongeBob alone, it’s more often that he’d do anything for his best friend. This is evident in the episode “No Weenies Allowed.” When SpongeBob wants to get into a club for tough people, he asks Patrick to get in a fake fight with him and lose.

When they do the fake fight, SpongeBob doesn’t lay a finger on Patrick. Instead, he gets beaten up by an invisible force. He’s spun around, slammed into the ground, and flung off towards the horizon. Getting beat up like that shows just how much Patrick is dedicated to SpongeBob.

5 Hated Him: When He Got SpongeBob In Trouble

SpongeBob tries to be studious at whatever he does, whether it’s fry cooking or jellyfishing. He always strives to be the best, and he even applies that same effort towards Mrs. Puff’s boating school.

In the episode “New Student Starfish,” Patrick decides to join SpongeBob at boating school. While there, Patrick draws a mean picture of Mrs. Puff and lets SpongeBob take the blame for it. Because of this, Mrs. Puff takes away one of SpongeBob’s Good Noodle Stars, which devastates him. Since Patrick knew how much the stars meant to SpongeBob, he should’ve confessed to Mrs. Puff.

4 Felt Bad: When Sandy Caught Him

Since Sandy is the only resident in Bikini Bottom who’s a land animal, she’s not from the city. In the episode “Texas,” SpongeBob and Patrick learn that Sandy misses her home state. To cheer her up, they decide to throw her a surprise party at the Krusty Krab. When she doesn’t want to go, they have to lure her there by insulting the Lone Star State.

Furious with them for insulting her home, Sandy chases after them with a lasso. She ends up catching Patrick and pulls him in, which causes a huge explosion. Sure, Patrick was insulting Sandy’s home, but it was a tough fate to watch for someone who was only trying to help.

3 Hated Him: When He Popped The Oldest Living Bubble

In the episode “Atlantis SquarePantis,” SpongeBob and Patrick go to Atlantis and find the “oldest living bubble.” Patrick is so amazed by the bubble that he takes a picture, which pops it. This might be okay if it were an accident, but Patrick knew exactly what he was doing.

Earlier, SpongeBob and Patrick found a fake “oldest-living bubble.” They took a picture of that, and it popped. By the time they found the real one, Patrick already knew that taking a picture would pop it. However, he took one anyway and got himself and SpongeBob in trouble.

2 Felt Bad: When He Almost Died

SpongeBob and Patrick aren’t often placed in life-threatening situations, but it did happen in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. In the movie, they get taken by the Cyclops and placed under a lamp. Without any water and plenty of heat, they’re left to dehydrate and shrivel out.

Throughout the movie, people have been calling SpongeBob and Patrick kids. To prove that they weren’t, they went on a dangerous quest. In what appeared to be their final moments, they decided to embrace their childlike nature and no longer be ashamed of it. It was a beautiful realization for both of them to come to.

1 Hated Him: When He Made Fun Of SpongeBob

A time when Patrick was actively rude to SpongeBob was the episode “I’m With Stupid.” In the episode, Patrick’s parents are visiting, and he wants to impress them. SpongeBob offers to pretend to be so dumb that Patrick will look smarter by comparison.

SpongeBob does such a good job of pretending that Patrick starts to actually believe the act. Patrick and his parents begin to insult SpongeBob and laugh at him. SpongeBob didn’t have to help, but Patrick’s family all make fun of him anyway.
