There are many characters in SpongeBob SquarePants that audiences have become attached to. Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and a host of other characters all have distinctive traits that make them relatable. One character in the show that might have varying reactions is the main man himself, SpongeBob.

SpongeBob is one of the more hit-or-miss characters of the show. Some fans may sympathize with his energetic personality, while others might relate to Squidward and find it annoying. However fans feel, there were many times in which they hated or felt bad for SpongeBob. Here are five of each of those times fans either hated or empathized with SpongeBob.

10 Felt Bad – When Squidward Pranked Him

SpongeBob’s favorite holiday is April Fool’s Day, according to Squidward. This is evident in the episode “Fools in April”, when SpongeBob gets ecstatic pulling harmless pranks on the customers of the Krusty Krab. Though the pranks don’t hurt anyone, they annoy Squidward so much that he pulls a mean one on SpongeBob.

Squidward’s prank involves SpongeBob being pulled by a rope across the restaurant. He’s slammed into walls, doused with flower, and thrown into a trashcan. SpongeBob was just having innocent fun, but Squidward took the pranks too far.

9 Hated Him – When He Mocked Sandy

In the episode “Squirrel Jokes”, SpongeBob becomes a stand-up comedian at the Krusty Krab. At first, he tells jokes that nobody laughs at. But when he starts telling jokes at the expense of Sandy, the crowd laughs hysterically and applauds him.

Sandy tells SpongeBob that the jokes are offending her and ruining her reputation. SpongeBob tries to go back to his old jokes, but when they don’t get a laugh, he keeps telling the offensive jokes about Sandy. It was unfortunate that SpongeBob cared more about getting laughs than his friend’s feelings.

8 Felt Bad – When He Got Stuck In His Wringer

Despite being underwater, SpongeBob still has to take a shower and dry himself. In the episode “Stuck in the Wringer”, he tried doing that but got stuck in his wringer. Things were only made worse when Patrick mistakenly glued him to it.

SpongeBob tried to enjoy his day with Patrick, but he couldn’t do anything because of the wringer. He couldn’t work, he couldn’t eat ice cream, and he couldn’t enjoy the rides at the carnival. Then when he got mad at Patrick for getting him stuck, everyone abandoned him. SpongeBob had a reason to be angry, but everyone still treated him like the bad guy.

7 Hated Him – When He Wouldn’t Listen To Gary

One of the closest bonds SpongeBob has is with his pet snail Gary. They’ve been with each other since they were both young, and they’re nearly inseparable. Though SpongeBob loves Gary, there are times where he hasn’t treated him the best.

One of these times is the episode “A Pal for Gary”. In the episode, SpongeBob brings another pet home so Gary will have company while he’s at work. But the pet turns out to be a monster and terrorizes Gary throughout the night. When Gary tries to get help, SpongeBob doesn’t believe him and continues to let him get tortured.

6 Felt Bad – When He Let Mystery Go

“A Pal for Gary” isn’t the first time SpongeBob got another pet. In the episode “My Pretty Seahorse”, SpongeBob finds a stray seahorse and names her Mystery. They quickly become friends, and SpongeBob decides to take her to the Krusty Krab while he works.

At the restaurant, Mystery takes a bite out of everything, from SpongeBob’s spatula to the grill. Mr. Krabs tells him that he has to let her go, and though he’s devastated, he does it.

5 Hated Him – When He Kicked Squidward Out

Normally Squidward is the one yelling at SpongeBob, but there have been times where it’s been the other way around. In the episode “Breath of Fresh Squidward”, Squidward gets electrocuted and becomes even nicer than SpongeBob.

Squidward’s kindness gets on SpongeBob’s nerves throughout the day, but he reaches his limit when he sees Squidward having fun with Patrick. He yells at Squidward, calls him names, and kicks him out of his own party. Squidward was only behaving like SpongeBob and didn’t deserve to be thrown out.

4 Felt Bad – When Everyone Turned On Him

When the Krabby Patty secret formula goes missing in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, everyone suspects Plankton stole it and goes after him. Plankton actually didn’t steal it, and SpongeBob is the only one who believes him. They both work together to escape the angry mob and find the formula.

But when they accidentally bring back a decoy formula Plankton made earlier, he gets mad at SpongeBob. Soon, everyone gets mad at SpongeBob, and they want to sacrifice him to somehow bring back Krabby Patties. All SpongeBob wanted to do was help and bring everyone together, but they all turned on him anyway.

3 Hated Him – When He Became Arrogant

A favorite pastime between SpongeBob and Sandy is practicing karate. It’s been the subject of multiple episodes, including “Karate Island”. In the episode, SpongeBob and Sandy are invited to Karate Island, but only SpongeBob is recognized for his abilities.

SpongeBob is crowned the “King of Karate” and gets a welcoming party, but Sandy barely gets recognized. SpongeBob lets the attention go to his head and starts belittling Sandy. His arrogance towards her made him one of the most unlikable characters in the episode.

2 Felt Bad – When He Didn’t Get Promoted

SpongeBob is arguably the hardest-working employee at the Krusty Krab. He gets to work early every day, always has a chipper attitude, and is one of the best fry cooks in Bikini Bottom. So when he didn’t get promoted in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, fans were understandably disappointed.

In the movie, Mr. Krabs opens a second Krusty Krub and makes Squidward the new manager. Though SpongeBob is the better worker, he has an extreme childlike nature, which is why the promotion went to Squidward. Nevertheless, Mr. Krabs still crushed SpongeBob’s dreams right in front of him.

1 Hated Him – When He Was Rude To Everyone

In the episode “Waiting”, SpongeBob waits by his mailbox all day for a toy to be delivered. As time goes on, he becomes increasingly irritable. This makes him lash out at anyone that passes by.

When Gary just wants to be fed, SpongeBob yells at him. When Patrick comes by with cake, he also yells at him, too. When Sandy comes by and asks to practice karate, he flips her over and rudely sends her away. People were only trying to talk to SpongeBob, yet he was selfish and impatient towards them.
