Scientists researching in the Atlantic Ocean found real-life counterparts for kidvid stars SpongeBob SquarePants and his best bud Patrick Star off the East Coast.

Christopher Mah, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researcher, tweeted a photo of a bright yellow sponge next to a bright pink sea star at the Retriever seamount, an underwater mountain. “I normally avoid these refs..but WOW. REAL LIFE Sponge bob and Patrick!” he wrote.

The Retriever seamount is some 200 miles from New York, a long way from SpongeBob’s TV home of Bikini Bottom. As for the photo, it was captured by the Okeanos Explorer, a remotely operated vehicle capable of going almost three miles into the ocean depths.

“I thought it would be funny to make the comparison, which for once was actually kind of comparable to the iconic images/colors of the cartoon characters. As a biologist who specializes in sea stars, most depictions of Patrick and SpongeBob are incorrect,” Mah told Business Insider.

Mah said the sponge is from the genus Hertwiga, which are typically white or orange at that depth, better colors for camouflage than bright yellow. The sea star — “a bright pink that strongly evoked Patrick” — is a Chondraster, which can be also be colored white or dark pink. Chondraster stars are carnivores that often eat sponges, but fortunately, SpongeBob never has to worry about that danger from Patrick, who now headlines his own show on Nickelodeon.
